[RBW] Re: Spousal Conversion stories: they love biking after riding a Riv
I can only hope for such a conversion. I showed my wife pics of the new Clementine, and she could not have been less enthused. I have this fantasy of the two of us riding off into the sunset, me on a Clem and she on a Clementine. She's just not that into it. Sigh. [RBW] Re: Spousal Conversion stories: they love biking after riding a Riv
My wife is not the avid cyclist I wish she would be but she does love to do the grocery shopping and other errands by bike rather than car which is great. The best I could do was to get her to finally ditch her aluminum Fuji (with shock forks and shock seat to dampen the harsh ride) for a Public mixte. Even then it was only because it was discounted below $500. She was amazed at the difference a steel bike makes. Overall, they are not bad bikes for what they are but I would love to get her on a Cheviot or Clementine or even a SOMA Buena Vista. Not going to happen. But, who am I to question her love of that (very) bright orange Public mixte? As long as it makes for happy riding around the area, we'll get to share that time together and the hilly distance stuff will remain my zen time. If I was to do that purchase over again, I would have tried to steer her toward Brooklyn Bikes. I'm intrigued as to what influence Grant had on their designs. That said, their matte black and red alternatives probably wouldn't get her to give up her happy orange Public. To quote others on this discussion, the heart wants what it wants. [RBW] Re: Spousal Conversion stories: they love biking after riding a Riv
My wife liked to bicycle but never owned a bike that fit her. After my positive experience with the Sam Hillborne we decided she would try a Betty Foye. She loves it! We really enjoy our rides on the Rivendells with one another. Both bikes are nicely built which contributes in no small measure to the fun we have. When we're out on the town on our bikes we're riding in style. She now suffers from N+1 syndrome which I am happy to encourage since her next purchase might facilitate my next purchase. Hah! I can't say that my spouse has taken the Riv flag, either. She likes cycling (her words), but it's not a passion. We'll do a picnic or short family ride. And it's a nice time. She's taken my Crosscheck townie on a few excursions, and she's ridden my Hunqapillar at least once. She didn't notice much of a difference... oh well. I can feel the magic carpet ride, so I'm happy about that. I asked her what she thought about the Cheviot when it came out. She didn't like the orange. I'll keep working on it. At least until then, the bikes are mine. (I'm lucky that we can fit the same size frame!) shoji On Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at 3:27:31 PM UTC-4, Wayne Naha wrote: I can only hope for such a conversion. Wayne: If it was the picture of the raw, unpainted frame, then yes, I can understand her lack of interest. It won't be long someone will post photos of a complete bike. Wait patiently for that event give it another try. For many of us, it's hard to envision the finished product by just looking at the frame, especially before paint. dougP On Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at 12:27:31 PM UTC-7, Wayne Naha wrote: I can only hope for such a conversion. [RBW] Re: Spousal Conversion stories: they love biking after riding a Riv
Well no Riv here either. But lots of Riv-like stuff has become a huge influence in my wife's cycling life. If we had more money I would build a custom mixte from Riv. It's not always about utility though. Sometimes it's about softening up the ride while actually carrying useful stuff - like lunch, or groceries. Throw away the HR monitor. Slow down when you want to. Go faster when you want to. Have fun. Oh look, something pretty! Those are the things that helped turn my wife from a very solid roadie into an MTBing, bicycle commuting, bicycle lifestyle wonderwoman. She has four bikes. The only one not ridden is the road bike. Who wants to go on a road ride when you have already done 80 miles this week just living your life. Good luck with your quest. [RBW] Re: Spousal Conversion stories: they love biking after riding a Riv
The first bike my wife fell in love with was our Bilenky tandem. We ride together. Although she sometimes feels out of control, she has more confidence in my bike skills than in her own. Now she follows the listing for tandem rallies. When I ask her if she wants to ride she always chooses the tandem. At the end of the 2013 season I bought her a Betty Foy. She refused to let me sell her 1984 Sequoia but now she rides the Betty around town - to the library and stuff like that. She takes it with her twice a year when she goes to Quilt Camp. She likes the easy on and off, the upright position, the traditional handle bars and the sheer beauty of the bike. I suspect it makes her feel it like a grande dame. I just asked my wife this question and she thought buying a tandem was a great idea. She added: do it slowly, make it fun for her, and always have a designated destination - like her favorite burrito joint. BTW the first rule of tendeming - The stoker is always right. [RBW] Re: Spousal Conversion stories: they love biking after riding a Riv
Sorry, can't help with the Rivendell part, but I did convert my wife into a bike lover after building her up a new Soma Mixte (in a Riv-ish, Bob-ish way) for her birthday four years ago. Porteur bars, Shimano Nexus 8 IGH, rear rack and panniers, and front basket. Oh, and 650B wheelset, for a smooth ride. She had always been uncomfortable on bikes before this one. It still took time to work out some kinks, as she has some nerve sensitiveness around her feet, but with a saddle swap and pedal swap, it took care of it. [RBW] Re: Spousal Conversion stories: they love biking after riding a Riv
I'd had my Atlantis for around 7-8 years. My wife was content with her ancient aluminum Trek 1420. A fellow list member forwarded a link to me for a 47 cm Atlantis in our area. More to humor me than any serious interest in the bike, she agreed to take a look at it. We met the owner in a large parking lot for a test ride. She returned after about 5 minutes with wide eyes big grin, and said Ive got to have this bike. Several years and thousands of miles later she still loves her Atlantis. dougP On Monday, March 9, 2015 at 11:13:57 AM UTC-7, Deacon Patrick wrote: My wife has yet to meet a bike she gets along well with, let alone one she is passionate about.
