[RBW] Re: Sugino XD crankarms only

2016-11-20 Thread Garth

I have read the RD2( rd meaning road-130mm bcd), is cold forged, though
some just say forged, which is the same case for the XD(which signifies a
110 bcd , with 74 bcd for the triple).

Honestly, cold forging does not mean better or worse, the quality/grade of
the aluminum, the shape and just how it is made is what matters. Frankly, I
don't think they are very good cranks at all regardless, from my
experience. I recently purchased a pair of Origin8 110 double crank arms
and I notice a diference in stiffness compared to the XD they replaced.
Plus no silly hidden bolts. The crank bolts have not loosened after first
tightenening, like the old dàys I remember before the XD when cranks bolts
stayed cranked. If anyone is looking for a decent 110 double for not a lot
of $$ I would recommend those. They may be marketed as bmx, single speed
or something but they are just regular 2 ring 110 cranks, use a 107mm
cartridge bb.

Really, the RD cranks are of inferior quality? Can anyone else comment on
that? I have been looking to RD for my new IGH build, need only a single
chainring and not needing a protector ring. Plus, I need a 54mm chainline.

[RBW] Re: Sugino XD crankarms only

2016-11-19 Thread Nick Payne
Thanks for the various replies. I checked the links provided for crank arms
only, but unfortunately I am after 165mm arms and those vendors are only
offering lengths from 170mm upwards.

I'm pretty sure the Mighty Tour is 110 BCD only (i.e. no 74 BCD fitting).

In the end I splurged on an Alpina2 crankset from Alex's Cycle in Japan
(comes with chainrings but I can reuse two of the three). I've purchased
from them in the past without problem, and if the quality of the cranks is
the same as one of the original model Alpina cranks I have on another bike,
they're about as good as you can get.

I love Sugino cranks but man trying to get a run down on what's what from
that company will drive you to drink.

As far as I know, the XD2 (also called the XD Pro, I believe, and have the
Sugino crown logo) only come already set up as a double or triple. The RD
usually comes as a single and is less expensive, but I think I've seen just
the arms for sale. I believe the RD cranks are melt forged, which makes for
a slightly lower quality aluminum. This is totally anecdotal, but I rode an
RD for a year as a SS and the spider kept getting slightly out of true
until I just gave up on them and went with something else.

The photo on the Outside Outfitters page advertising XD cranks looks like
an RD or Alpina to me, but it's possible they're using an incorrect stock
photo and it's an XD after all since they list the correct BCD's on the
double and triple.*

Finally, there is the Mighty Tour, which is available to purchase with just
the arms, but which is Sugino's most expensive offering (not such a great
deal now that the Yen has picked up). I imagine it's because they are made
of 2000 aluminum, which is light and super durable.

**A warning about Outside Outfitters. I've tried to purchase products from
them on several different occasions only to be told that the items are out
of stock. The problem is that they charge you at the time of purchase
instead of when they ship it out, and I had to wait nearly two months after
hounding them with phone calls and emails to get my money back.*
