Back in the day I would sprinkle instant coffee powder into polyester resin for 
surfboard repairs. Might end up looking more tan/brown than amber though.

Use some alcohol based ink, it'll mix right in and probably be more 
beautiful.  At that point, why not custom tint to a more interesting color?

The first time I shellacked bar tape, I stopped by Riv (probably when they 
were upstairs at the old address) and I believe it was Joe Bauder squeezed 
a small amount of liquid dye for me out of a plastic bottle to darken the 
shellac. It may have been an ounce or less of dye, and I don't remember 
exactly what it was, but it mixed in easily. A hardware store may be able 
to help with some dye.

I have an entire bag of amber flakes lying around somewhere.  If you'd want 
a hand full of flakes I can send'm your way.  Disolve and mix in w/ your 
clear.
