I've never heard that Salsa stems (the original ones, not as a QBP brand)
were made anywhere but in Petaluma.

"Hecho en Petaluma" was pretty proudly emblazoned on all the materials and
packaging. They did some work with TTT, but that was clearly marked.

[RBW] Re: WTB: Nitto Dynamic 100mm Stem-> and Broken Brooks boo-hoo:(

2010-06-19 Thread Ryan
Nice..nice mate for the QB greenreminds me of those classy Nitto-
made Ritchey Force stems which came stock on 92-93 RB1s and X0-1s. I
wonder if those Salsa stems were ever contracted out to Nitto...in the
late 80's and early 90's Nitto made OEM stems for Cannondale
SM2000's ...and of course the afore-mentioned Ritchey Force stems. I
love that Crystal Fellow Nitto stem posted earlier

Off this thread a littlethe Brooks B-17 on my X0-1 had the
rails snap...I was using a circa 96 Campagnolo Record seatpost. Don't
know how long ago this actually happened, but I was lucky it didn't
come off while riding. I discovered this on Thursday. We had very
unsettled weather with thunder/lightning so I called my partner from
work to bail me out...I'm ashamed to admit this last. When we got
home, we pulled the X0-1 out of the hatchback by the back of the
saddle and the saddle detached itself from the seatpost. Interesting
break and I'll try and get pictures posted...no I'm not soured on
Brooks...ordered a new B-17 Standard last night. The saddle it's
replacing was bought from Rivendell in 1999 and my X0-1 probably sees
the most use...more than my 2 Rivendells because I ride the X0-1 to
work,for errands etc...

Anyway..nobody hurt so it's all good but it's sad to retire a saddle
that was nicely broken in...and in fact, the leather has plenty of
life left.

I expect you will continue to see good builders like Bruce Gordon and
Curtlo and others continue to make brazed steel quills as long as
there is demand.

Sourcing a whole line of drop forged quill stems is a whole 'nother
animal - both versus the small shop quills and seat posts. Tooling
and skill set is unique and costs a lot to get. Nitto was there when
quills were the market and owing to quirks in the Japanese market
never went away. Maybe Chris and his partners can track down a
serviceable set of tooling from Italy or something.

Otherwise, I just don't see someone spending tens of thousands of
dollars to start manufacturing something that is not going to sell in
numbers. Especially with Nitto and the custom builders already
reaching a lot of the market.

Chris has pulled rabbits out of the hat before ...

likely as the tooling is so expensive. Quills are a very small piece
