Re: [RBW] Re: WTT New Barlow Pass for New Jack Brown Green

2015-08-21 Thread Patrick Moore
Do the Compass Extra Legers usually expand with use? I wonder if the new
Elk Passes will expand by 5 mm or so. Half of me wants them to empuffen
(great verb) to the full 32 mm; t'other half likes them just as they are,
~27.5 mm on quite narrow (13 mm inside) semi-aero rims. For me, 28 mm is an
ideal gofast size -- it feels and looks wide, just as the 42 cm Maes
Parallel feels wide and square after the B 135 only 40 mm at top of ramps
and the 37 or 38 Compass M Parallels on the Rivs.

mine have only been mounted for a week and only ridden once. I hope to put

[RBW] Re: WTT New Barlow Pass for New Jack Brown Green

2015-08-21 Thread Lungimsam
1. Compass/Bicycle Quarterly articles/blog state that tires will get an mm
or two wider with use/time, iirc.

2. They state that rim width plays a role in how wide the tire will
empuffen,

3. They also state that handling on 700c bikes degrades with any tire wider
than 35mm. They believe running wider tires is best on a 650b bike because
they keep their nimble handling with wider tires. They say that the reason
they do make wider than 700 x 35mm tires is to help 700c-ers get to
experience the cush of wider tires. But they believe handling degrades at
anything wider than 35mm on a 700c wheeled bike. Unless Compass/BQ has
changed their position since I last read.

4. I think their stated tire measurements could only be made clearer by
including the name/width of the rim it was measured on, as well as how much
they were initially empuffed for the initial measurement (psi/bar) used to
list in their tire description, and a disclaimer to educate the consumer
that real life width will be determined by rim width, tire pressure, and
time/use.

Empuffery is definitely more complex than first meets the eye.

Re: [RBW] Re: WTT New Barlow Pass for New Jack Brown Green

2015-08-21 Thread Patrick Moore
I think that what BQ/Compass in fact claims is that the gyroscopic factors
determined by tire diameter and width and of course weight at the given
distance from the axle result in the best handling when the perimeter of
the wheel is about 13.5 from the axle. They don't to my knowledge use the
word degrade, which I think conveys a misapprehension.

As to their precise claim, as above, I am skeptical, since Grant at least
seems in my experience (3 26 wheel custom roads) to have devised a way to
make very light, 24.5 to 25 actual diameter wheels behave superbly; and
while my Fargo with 700C C 50 to 65 mm wheels doesn't handle nearly as
nicely, I put that down to the mtb-type geometry, at least in good part,
and not solely to the size of the wheels.

I don't remember what he attributes it too.

I just remember him writing on the blog that, for 700c bikes, he felt that
handling gets worse when the tire with exceeds 35mm, while 650b bikes keep
their nimble handling with tires wider than that.

I am pretty sure he used the term degrades, but it doesn't matter what
the term was, as he was the one doing the writing, and he had a right to
put it however he wanted since it is his private blog, and not a scientific
journal.

I'm not gonna look it up or anything. But I'll gladly remove the post if

Remove the post: no, of course not. But I just wanted all to be clear about
what he said; and if he used the word degrade, then that's fine too as
long as his meaning is clear. IIRC, Jan's limit was about 26.5, so that 50
mm 559s, 42 mm 584s, and sub-35 mm 622s would fit the bill.

Yes, the Jones review does make one take a step back on this. I think any
size of tire will handle just fine on a bike expertly designed for it
(within reason, of course -- and don't ask me to define reason).
