[RBW] Re: Well, Damn
Chris AND Tom Thanks for reminding us all what it's like to be on both sides. I've been in a car more than I'd like lately, and shudder when I recognize how much our view of the world changes when we're looking through a windshield. I'm committing to be a more visual driver and a more visible rider. Re: [RBW] Re: Well, Damn
One of two things: You were grossly careless. Takeaway: you've learned a positive lesson. Be humbly grateful for the lesson learned and that the damage was not worse, AND that you have the wherewithal to make good the other person's losses. Or you were not grossly careless, but circumstances led to an unusually dangerous situation where the result of minor distraction, or minor failure to anticipate all possible outcomes, was amplified; or perhaps, better, where only with great forethought and preparation could you have anticipated such an occurrence. Takeaway from the last, which I is expect is the case: don't beat yourself up; recognize that the world is imperfect and bad things happen despite all our precautions; and again be thankful that things were not worse. As I said, I've been in this situation before. I've not seriously injured anyone, but I've been reckless and certainly could have seriously injured someone. I'm very grateful to learn a lesson in caution and self control (that's my lesson; not saying it's one you need). "Use every man after his desert, and who should 'scape whipping?" Unless you can reconstruct what prevented you from seeing what you are charged with seeing, the mind naturally defaults to the explanation that you were not giving driving – some aspect of driving – “the care and attention it deserves.” I shared this because I am trying to have always in mind the enormity of the responsibility we take on when we pilot a two ton projectile at fast speeds on public roads, because of what I see as the possibility that I had somehow forgotten that, and with the hope that others might give it a fresh thought as well. I was driving home from work, with bright sun and a dappled shoulder on the left side of the road caused by shade from large trees lining the street. I needed to make a left turn across traffic (two lane road, wide shoulder on both sides), but there were a couple of cars coming from the other direction, so I stopped to wait for the cars to go by. Once they passed, I began to turn into my street (slowly, thank God) when a cyclist appeared seemingly out of nowhere immediately in front of me. I stomped on the brakes, but didn’t stop in time and hit the cyclist, who cartwheeled off her bike. She remained conscious but suffered a broken leg and cuts and bruises. I wish that I could share Chris’s generosity toward the motorist in this circumstance (“it’s really easy to see this incident from both sides…”), but honestly I can’t, and it’s been tearing me up. She had the right of way; she was riding entirely lawfully; she was just out for a training ride when two tons of steel knocked her off her bike and broke her leg. I had decided not to share this information with the group (at least in part because of the shame of it), but Chris’s message changed my mind, and perhaps something good can come from it. I am typically quite a careful driver – much more so since I began cycling again 7 or 8 years ago – but I’ve redoubled my vigilance since this accident, and I urge others who drive cars to do the same. I still can’t reconstruct how I didn’t see the cyclist, and it frightens me to realize that a driver highly conscious of cyclists and their rights like me could still make such a horrible mistake. Thomas: I don't envy you. I think as a culture we at least subscribe to the notion of "turning the other cheek" if someone strikes you (literally), but we're really bad at handling what happens when you're the one that does the striking, especially if it's accidental. And we live long lives; we *are* going to make some pretty miserable mistakes. I think the way you've adapted your riding and driving style probably speaks to your quality as much as your guilt does. As does your willingness to share how you feel about it. I think talking about it definitely helps. And the ibuprofen. Take care. Och, Tom! I am so sorry you are experiencing the guilt of what happened. Perhaps it's ignorance on my part, but I have a hard time picturing anyone on this group being an unconscientious driver. Granted I do not ride in very populated areas, so the volume of traffic I have to contend with and the frequency of intersections is nothing compared with a city, but I always presume any vehicle is going to cut me off until I know otherwise. I learned my lesson the hard way in college with my windshield smasher into a left-turning car. Tom, my friend. I'm really sorry for the pain and guilt you must be feeling. I'll try to help you make something good come out of your experience by promising that I will recommit myself to being as careful as I can be when I'm behind the wheel. Actually I just looked at the downtube and it's fubar. https://www.flickr.com/photos/lumachrome/15148900746/in/photostream/ Ibuprofen is one hell of a drug and I'm back on my feet today. I have a new business idea though. The gauze the hospital gave me is white, and it picks up cat hair like a moogerfooger, so I propose a custom gauze service where you send in pictures of your cats and it makes a custom colored gauze that matches your cat/dog's coat. You can specify up to 4 different cats by submitting pictures and hair length + size for each, and it will do a simulation to provide the exact match, like camo. Dang, that mighty Homer is used up. R.I.P. Homer. Bummer. :-( I'd rather see a hundred crumpled Homers than a single broken bone on you, CC. I'm super grateful for that. There's a sign on the display Hunqapillar at Bike Book and Hatchet that reads. "This is a Bicycle. Bicycles have no soul" or something to that effect. We get attached and sentimental, and even feel loss, but it is just a bike. An excellent bike, but it's replaceable. Left turning autos failing to yield the right of way to pedestrians and cyclists is often at the top of annual car/pedestrian/cyclists injury and fatality statistics. Law enforcement needs to get much more aggressive enforcing infractions. Federal and local government really ought to produce driver education video and on-line pieces about proper left turn maneuvers at the same level they do encouraging seat belts and not driving under the influence. I'm glad you appear to be doing relatively well. Re: [RBW] Re: Well, Damn
We are the place for good advice on this sort of thing! I especially agree with the two "Patricks". Our legal/medical/insurance system is built on short-term adversarial relationships, but this kind of accident can be long-term life changing, especially if you feel like jumping up after being hit right away! Document, notify, get expert evaluations of body and bike, and make no assumptions of good will from the other party, or make any hasty agreement with them. I agreed to getting a new wheel after discovering the woman who hit me had not notified her insurance and tried to deny she had hit me, but over time, I discovered the frame was no longer true, and the fork eventually cracked, but because it was steel, it didn't fail without warning. My body, well, it was OK after that crash, just a little sore two days later for several weeks... Glad you are OK...but take care of yourself as Patrick Moore advises, (and I suspect he well knows what he's talking about!) and make sure you file a claim for whatever you're legally entitled to. I wish you a speedy recovery...evidently you still have your sense of humour which is a good thing. [RBW] Re: Well, Damn
After my left hook in Jan 2013 (on NW Evergreen just after it splits off from NW Cornell, by the Verizon store), I also got left-hooked by his insurance. Fortunately *I* have good insurance. After going into work and getting yelled at by everyone, I spent the day in the ER. The first doctor didn't like my EKG, and worried about heart damage. (I emailed a pic of it to my brother the anesthesiologist. He thought it was a very fine EKG :-) ) Anyway, nothing broken, but I hurt like heck for a few days. Didn't seem to do any brain damage, but my left side, knee mostly, was unhappy for a few months afterward. Oh, yeah, the bike (Rivendell Bleriot) - front wheel was bent, fork was mangled, top tube and down tube were slightly bent - I could tell because the paint was crinkled and flaking. After a framebuilder friend told me it was fixable, but he couldn't get to it anytime soon, I called Rivendell and had a wonderful chat with Keven. We talked about the framebuilders they recommend for this, the Bleriot frame was shipped off, and eventually returned with a shiny new fork (upgrade; Bleriot forks aren't around these days), all new tubes from the S&S couplers forward, and a spiffy new paint job. My LBS rebuilt my front wheel with a new rim and spokes. The SON28 hub was fine. So, yes, do talk with Riv about repairs. They will do right by you. I was really pleased with the whole process. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Well, Damn
Yikes! Glad to hear that you escaped relatively intact. Patrick M. gives great, salient advice. You will probably discover more aches and pains (document!) as your body relaxes over the next few days. Definitely get ahold of your auto insurance co if you have any. One of the reasons I'll probably stick with mine is all the phenomenal work they did to settle my bike/door interaction a few years back. "Replacement Value" is an important concept to get across to the other insurance co (as well as your own, but that is typically not as much of an issue. The current price to replace the damaged items. Clothing, helmet, gloves, packs, etc. And of course the bike. They should cover all ER/doc stuff. (I was ambulance transported for mine, which isn't cheap). If your insurance co is doing their job, they'll pay all that stuff and get reimbursed from the other driver's co. Any financial settlement (real costs plus loss of work, pain/suffering, etc.) is probably negotiated by the other co with you. They are probably hoping you say "yes" to the first offer, generally speaking, which means they will typically come in low. Once you sign off, it's done. hope that helps. It was an unpleasant surprise to see you at work yesterday. I'm glad you're well. I meant to pop back in and see you but I was quite busy on the other side of the ER. Hope you heal quickly. Also hope Homer is back on the road soon. You certainly seemed to fair better than my last friend who came through the ER complaining of chest pain and left a few days later with one less testicle and a cancer diagnosis. [RBW] Re: Well, Damn
Och! Chris! Prayers for a rapid and full recovery. Since it is my unwitting area of expertise, here is the brain injury stuff that hopefully will not apply, but likely does to some extend due to the rapid deceleration you, and the brain in your skull, experienced. Any idea how fast the car was moving? Brain issues (no direct impact required for coup countrecoup where the brain bounces around like mellow in a bowl dropped in the floor) can happen in the type of accident your just had (I had one dearly identical as one of my 8 concussions at 25 + 5 mph followed two weeks later by blacking out randomly for 3 months) and may well NOT show up for days, weeks, or even months (depending on lots of factors, including how soon you return to your normal routine and discover the world "just seems harder" without any obvious explanation. After my last concussion it took 6 weeks for full symptoms to happen. Presume you have at least a mild concussion and treat yourself accordingly. Rest as much as your body wants to. Eat lots of the darkest chocolate you can find, along with taking calcium/magnesium supplements, arnica, and chamomile, Vitamin B-12 Methylcobalamin sublingual (10,000 mcg/day), and eating ceylon cinnamon sticks a wee bite at a time, up to a stick or two a day. All this helps flush out the various chemical cascade that helps in the instant of the crash but causes problems over time. Also, remember there is a "snowball" effect to concussions. Once you've had one, you're more likely to have two, more likely to have a third, etc... And later, lighter concussions can seem to cause more damage due to previously caused "cracks" in the neural infrastructure. Give yourself time before getting back to doing anything more physical so your body awareness and motion and coordination returns to normal. I pray you need none of this and the initial diagnosis that you are fine is true. However, ER's are notorious for ignoring the realities of head injuries and not preparing folks to watch for signs of a brain injury occurring in the days, weeks, and months ahead. Frankly I'm stunned if the ER did not mention that possibility to you and give you things to watch for (which ought to be malpractice now, but isn't). Dude! Your helmet is a goner, which inherently means your brain went for a tumble in your skull. The simplest thing to watch for is noticing the the world just "seems harder" in ways you can't understand, doing things you used to do all the time with ease, or far more slowly that others now seem to do them. Feel free to write me here or off group if you have any questions. Rest and heal well! Christopher, glad you are feeling OK, due be cautious about your recovery. This all reminds me why I wear a helmet. The one kind of fall they are most helpful in is a collision. You may get a concussion but chance of a skull fracture go way down. I hope neither the driver nor insurance company gives you a hard time. Glad you're OK and in good wit about the crash. 2° what Patrick said, they take the rates to cover losses. Each time I've been hit, the driver seemed more deeply impacted than me when all was said and done (by sheer grace, and deeper into a line of credit with Karma). Sort of my own program of building awareness of the deadly force of physics those drivers are responsible for while operating their vehicles, one by one. Hope you don't get stiff and achy after the endorphins go, and that your bike gets justly straightened out quickly as well. [RBW] Re: Well, Damn
Oh, geez. Glad you're mostly intact, so sorry for your bike! What others have said. Photograph *everything.* If you have bruises that emerge over time, take photos every day to show the progress. And be very careful, injuries can appear after a while, so go slow, but check everything out. Photograph everything you were carrying, wearing, riding, etc. By all means, contact the perp's insurance company (you'd be amazed how many people try to sneak by) as well as your own (when I got hit, the perp was uninsured. My auto insurance, UI coverage, paid $50,000 of my medical bills and then another $50,000 pain and suffering award). I assume you were checked for a concussion, but if not...get checked. You may want an attorney, or at least a consulation with one--particularly if you the perp's insurance company comes to with what sounds like an attractive offer you can have right away if you'll just sign a release. Sign no release of claims whatsoever for at least six months, even if you feel OK. Things sometimes don't show up for quite a while. Again, glad you're in one piece.
