[RBW] Re: hatchets

2015-09-01 Thread Surlyprof
I have a nice woodshop in the garage and no *need* for a hatchet but still
feel the draw and appeal. There is just something great about the
experience of owning and using finely crafted tools. Slightly off-topic...
I've owned a Sven Saw like the ones at Riv for 25+ years and it was always
one of the best backpacking products I've owned. The curated tools they
sell at B,B are just fantastic.

'frivolous lumbersexual purchase'

Three words I was not expecting to read tonight... :) Almost makes me want
to order a GB hatchet right now!

I admire the craftsmanship of the hatchet's Riv sells, and the simplicity
of the hand axe as a basic tool of human's existence for literally millions
of years is pretty easy to romanticize. At least it is for me!

I'd definitely agree there is a fairly tenuous link between hatchet use and
the vast majority of my bike mileage but that doesn't make it any less fun.

I have carried and Estwing Scout hachet for years. It's dramatic
protection against the impending alien zombie invasion. They also work for
cutting wood and building fires! Who knew?

That's just what the alien zombies *want* you to think. If you're
concentrating on arming yourself piecemeal with little hatchets, you'll
slack off on development of the bacteriological agents, silver bullets and
freeze-rays you'll really need to thwart the invasion.

Forewarned is forearmed.

They're useful tools, for some. But I'm not of them :p. That's why I'm
scared to visit rbbh. I've always wanted a wetterling or GB axe or
hatchet. But for me would be a really frivolous lumbersexual purchase...

Wouldn't normally carry one on a bike, though, that's strictly car camping.

They chop and carve wood better than a gun.
