Thanks for sharing this. Truly one of a kind, and I bet you'll have a blast on it. Thanks for the compliments on the build. Yes, I have a Bruce Gordon derailleur cable disconnect on the front cable. I plan to add one to the rear cable as well, but I was in a hurry to get the bike built up and skipped the rear one on the original build. Oh great! Now that I'm just trying to rationalize myself OUT of pulling the trigger on a Bombadil you go and do this. and WHAT in the hell is up with the flask! I won't be able to sleep tonight, looks great. [RBW] Re: photos of my Bombadil build
I think the photos give the illusion that the fenders are too small. Take a look at the last photo in the set; it shows the width better than most. The fenders are 60mm wide Berthouds. The 60s have a shallower/flatter shape than the 50/40/35mm Berthouds. There is plenty of clearance between the tire and fender. Granted I haven't ridden it in really sticky mud conditions yet, and I do get the occasional rock-carried-around-the-fender noise (as with all metal fenders, in my experience), but it's not a big deal. The one downside of the fenders that I have found is that when riding over small logs or down root-dropoffs, I have caught the rear edge of the front fender a couple of times. I haven't bent it yet, but I'll probably pull the fenders off for the dry season, just to reduce the chance of bending 'em. cheers, Andrew --- On Fri, 7/24/09, bpus...@aol.com wrote: From: bpus...@aol.com Subject: [RBW] Re: photos of my Bombadil build To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com Date: Friday, July 24, 2009, 10:28 AM I'm sorry, I don't mean to be critical - I realize that building up a bike is a very personal thing - but I don't see it as a "go anywhere" bike. [RBW] Re: photos of my Bombadil build
I thought I might get some comments about the stem... I built the stem myself, about 22 years ago. I'd long since gotten rid of the original Univega that I built it for, but kept the stem and Ti bar, so I had it sandblasted and painted along with the Bombadil. The stem was inspired by bull moose bars and also by the space-frame designs of Sir Alex Moulton. http://www.moultonbicycles.co.uk/models.html The four 3/8" diameter tubes are .035" wall 4130 Chro-moly and it is all fillet brazed together. I don't remember the weight, but it turned out to be pretty light, for such a long stem. I think I saved a couple of pounds over the original (bottom-of-the-line 1984 Univega) bull moose bars that it replaced. Mostly I just like the look! cheers, Andrew --- On Fri, 7/24/09, Bill Connell wrote: From: Bill Connell Subject: [RBW] Re: photos of my Bombadil build To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com Date: Friday, July 24, 2009, 9:11 AM On Fri, Jul 24, 2009 at 11:02 AM, ANDREW LETTON wrote: > Hi Folks- > I finally got around to uploading the photos of my Bombadil: > http://www.flickr.com/photos/letton/sets/72157621668822061/ > enjoy! > cheers, > Andrew Did i miss a discussion on that stem?
