[RBW] Re: tandems and touring

2009-03-17 Thread Steve Kesling

Yup nivachrome, I think it was a bit stronger so they were able to draw the
tubes a bit thinner. We have always like the bike. Went down to Santana to
get a braze on for the bike so we would be able to use the new dic brake.
Looked around saw all the new upgrades and also saw Bills Beyond tandem.
Lifted it and that was about all it took to make the big purchase. They did
all the upgrades we wanted on the noventa and we ended up buying it back.
Santana said they would sell the noventa for us on ebay. The selling price
of the noventa was then put toward the purchace of the new tandem. So now
we still have an upgraded Noventa and a super light really fast Beyond. We
put racks on the Noventa and it carries the weight well, we have even pulled
a BOB trailer lots of miles behind it as well.

Seth, Santana stopped making the Noventa a few years back. It was a fillet
brazed frame, very well done, smooth welds and very clean. We toured with
fenders on ours and maybe 700x 28's tires.

I'm not familiar with recent Arrivas, but back in the day all Santanas
could take tires up to around 35 mm, and had fittings for racks. I took
my old 83 steel Sovereign touring several times.

The difference with tandem cranks is that the pedal threading is
backwards - since the spider is on the left side, the threading needs
to be reversed or they'll unscrew themselves.

I only used it for week, but I was very impressed. The bike handled
well and you could cary a lot of stuff.
I could of easily done without the front panniers.
The trailer attached to axel caps that are designed to except the
trailer ends. The make both nuts and quick release versions. The frame
of the mount uses spring of the steel to hold it in place. The have a
video that shows it at: http://www.extrawheel.com/instrukcja_en.php
The Santana has a 140mm drop out width which was the maximum when I
bought it 2 years ago.
