Or your brake pad mounting bolts might have those curvy washers in them so you
can easily toe in the pads and then tighten the pad bolts without having to
bend the caliper arms.

I'll third that it sounds like the rim is worn out. Feeling around the
brake track, does it feel concave? If so, that's another sign that it's
worn out and on the edge of failure. In any case, I'd take it to the LBS
for a second opinion, and probably a new rim.

Rim is 650b Aerohead (yeah). It has probably 16000 miles on it, and it is
worn some. Right by the seam, the rim is about a mm fatter; I can hold the
brakes constant, spin the wheel, and it catches right at the seam, even
though the seam is wonderfully smooth.

Don't see any cracks in the rim. Thoughts? Time for a new front rim?
Really, the whole front end kind of shudders!

Lynne, I'd give a call to Jude at SugarWheelWorks
(http://www.sugarwheelworks.com/). Her shop is over on Williams in No Po.
She'll be able to tell what is going on and she builds beautiful wheels.

Rim time. If the rim suddenly splits, the results are ugly. If you can
detect that significant a difference, a lot of metal is gone.

[RBW] Re: thump thump thump thump

2014-05-07 Thread Scot Brooks
Hi Lynne,
Sounds like you've done a good job going down the checklist, but here's
what I'd do before building a new wheel. File the brake pads so that any
little metal shards are out of the picture, then I'd give a bit of angle to
the pads, so instead of looking like this | | when you look down at them,
they'll look like this / \ but not as extreme. This will make it so the
trailing edge of the pad (since the top of the tire is moving away from
you) makes contact with the rim first, rather than the leading edge.
That'll eliminate the hard edge of the pad as a possible reason at least.
You can do this yourself with an adjustable wrench by bending the arms of
the brake (assuming you have caliper brakes), but your LBS probably has the
Park tool designed for this very thing. Hopefully that works! If not, we'll
come up with a plan B.
