I usually push off with my left foot on the pedal and right foot on the
ground, swinging my right leg up and over the back, which works well unless
there's a kid on the back. That's when I appreciate the low top tube of my
Yuba as I have to step through and then pedal off.

I'm with Patrick on this one...left foot on the ground, right leg up and

pain with with a fully loaded Hunq with large Saddlesack and what-not.

I dismount after stopping as well, same thing in reverse - no coasting

2014-11-05 Thread Anne Paulson
I stand on my left leg and swing my right leg over the back of the
bike. Even with the Large Saddlesack or panniers, I don't have a
problem with that.

When I used to ride a tandem with a kid stoker, I learned to swing my
leg over the handlebars instead, because stokids have to climb up on
the bike while it is stopped, so he would already be seated on his
saddle and I didn't want to kick him in the face. But now that I don't
ride a tandem anymore I swing my leg to the rear.

[RBW] Riv for the wife

2014-11-04 Thread Michael Flournoy
Sorry for the rambling post but...
My wife is bike dreaming.
We have always had His and Hers bicycles since we were dating 38 years
ago. Motobecane Nomade and Mirage Mixte, Trek 820's guys frame and a girls
frame, Bianchi Hybrid's guys and girls, etc. They don't have to match
exactly but simply be a pair that belong together. A year ago I bought
myself a Sam Hillborne ( blue, web special ) which I am happy with. BUT,
for the first time, we don't match.
So...The problem is the Betty Foy has been discontinued and the Cheviot
colors are a turn off. She just doesn't want Orange and the Green looks
like puke to both of us. Many years ago a friend of mine said never buy a
car or a bike or a house, no matter how good the deal if you don't like the
color, because every time you look at it, that will be your first thought
and you'll never be happy. I think he was right. It seems silly on the
surface, but these are things that you may be using and looking at every
day for decades. We still own the Motobecanes - 38 years and still in use.
:- )
We have talked about buying a Cheviot and having it painted to better
suit. $$$ is an issue on an already expensive bike, plus I worry about the
durability. On cars, at least, the factory paint is always much tougher,
I've had terrible experience with repaints.
Is there any credible rumor of other colors coming down the pipeline (
since they just got the green I doubt it )?
We live in Virginia, so we can't just go take a look, maybe the Orange is
nicer in person? So my other thought is to buy the frame only and check it
out. Maybe we'll like it after all or if not have someone within driving
distance do a repaint and build it up myself.
2 questions. Who is recommended in our area. And what is the experience
with powdercoating? I understand it to be a really tough, durable finish
but can it be done to look nice also?

RE: [RBW] Riv for the wife

2014-11-04 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
Orange is the fastest color for a bike. I know, because I don’t have one and
that explains how slow I am…

If you want inexpensive but very solid quality repaints, Bruce at The Color
Factory in Waretown, NJ does very nice work. He’s painted 5 frames for me, and
they were all very well done, and all under $200! (None over new paint, but I
don’t see why that would make any difference.) He takes framesets shipped, and
ships them back, all at quite low cost (I want to say around $30?). Bobby
Birmingham (Montclair Bobby B on this list) put me on to Bruce; Bobby’s had
several frames painted there as well, and though he can speak for himself, I
think he’s been extremely satisfied, too. Finally, I saw Peter Morgano’s
(Goshen Peter on this list) Bombadil immediately after a repaint (orange, by
the way) at Bruce’s place when I was picking up one of my frames, and it was
BEAUTIFUL.

Bruce has put a contrasting headtube color on one of the frames he did for me –
I think it was $30 or so more, and looked very pretty. He’s also painted
matching fenders and vintage chainguards for me, and all were the same high
quality.

No connection to Bruce, other than I think he gives great value and fine
quality, and I intend to keep using him.

You'll at least know the cost and can use that to help make a decision. If

Sorry for the rambling post but...
 My wife is bike dreaming.
We have always had His and Hers bicycles since we were dating 38
years ago. Motobecane Nomade and Mirage Mixte, Trek 820's guys frame and a
girls frame, Bianchi Hybrid's guys and girls, etc.
