[RBW] hilsen build questions

2011-11-05 Thread Seth Vidal
Hey,
some dumb questions I couldn't find answers to on the interwebs:

1. what length bottom bracket spindle would go on a hilsen with a
double like the sugino alpina? 110?
2. what would it be with a triple like an xd2? 107?
3. Does anyone know how to measure a rear derailler to figure out what
it's maximum cog size is? I have an ultegra rd and the only label on
the cage is 'XF' so I can't tell if it is SS or GS.

Thanks
-sv

I believe 107 is for the "Quickbeam" double on Rivendells. I'm using a 113 with
a Sugino Triple on my Hilsen.

You can almost always shift a bigger cog than spec. Definately with Ultegra
long cage.

Shimano used to state that the max cog size for either Ultegra was 27t. They
now state 28t, IFIRC. This may be because they now make Ultegra level 11-28
cassettes. Either Ultegra model will comfortably manage a 30t cog - that's the
reason that Sheldon introduced the Harris custom Century Special cassettes in
13-30 and 12-30. They play nicely together. Some have gotten them to work
with 32t cogs by reversing the "B" adjustment screw and the like, but the setup
can be a bit finicky.

I'm happily running an Ultegra GS (medium cage) on my Atlantis with a 13-30
Century Special and a 20-33-46 triple.

Your dropout geometry plays a role as well. Some dropouts hold the r der
closer to the cogs than others. So it's not a purely inherent property of
the derailer itself.
