Bike snob skewered that article hard today, it was hilarious. As a nyc rider I can tell you that one can ride the citi bike at 4mph for 10 minutes in wooden shoes if you want. Don't take anything the times says so seriously. Haven't yet gotten to BSNYC; this is one more encouragement. Who says I'm taking the NYT seriously? Not me! I forwarded the link only for the "no ruse shoes" connection. I still think loose-as-you-want straps and street shoes are the ideal "what, me worry?" shoe-to-pedal solution. I like plain old tennies with my clips and straps (not Converse, sierratradingpost closeouts - http://www.sierratradingpost.com/hummel-stadil-low-top-usa-shoes-canvas-sneakers-for-men~p~3399g/?filterString=s~men-sneaker%2F&colorFamily=01) though I do use boat shoes for quick in and out errands. With my Grip Kings, Merrell Convertible sandals or Merrell Proterra Sport for toe cover. I'm adverse to cleats.
