Some of it is a matter of manufacturing plant closures due to covid:
https://www.bicycleretailer.com/international/2021/06/10/shimano-forced-shut-malaysia-component-factory-latest-blow-supply-chain

Some of it is due to unprecedented demand - a new bicycle boom:
https://www.bbc.com/future/bespoke/made-on-earth/the-great-bicycle-boom-of-2020.html

And a lot is due to the general clog in transport:
https://www.npr.org/2021/06/21/1007938067/cargo-is-piling-up-everywhere-and-its-making-inflation-worse

It will all go back to “normal” eventually, but the normal will not be what
it was before the pandemic.

Re: [RBW] Parts Shortage Article

2021-06-21 Thread Ben Mihovk
The nightmare of imports shortages extends to golf, as well. I'm possibly
the only person in this group who loves golf as much as bikes, and I even
work in a golf shop when school is out over the summers. Even though most
OEMs are based in the United States, almost everyone's components are
manufactured in China, shipped here, and assembled in US or Mexican plants.
Grips, shafts, iron and metal wood heads...all randomly out of stock at
each manufacturer, causing delays that we in the bike world would
recognize. The biggest difference is (in my mind) the bike folks are more
patient and understanding than golfers. When I'm at the shop, it seems I
spend a lot time answering phone calls from people who placed orders a
couple weeks ago and would like an update...then checking with the OEM and
hearing there's a delay, and then calling the customer back so he (always a
guy) can yell at me and make me feel like I did something wrong. Not a
whole bunch of fun, and I'm hopeful that the good people at Rivendell
aren't fielding calls like that.
