Re: [RBW] Reasonably priced rust-resistant chain?
I recently bought some dynamos and lights from a German bike web site, and they have Connex chains for decent prices (10SX for $30 http://www.bike-discount.de/en/buy/wippermann-connex-10sx-chain-10-speed-nickel%2C-stainless-steel-32867). $23 flat shipping to the US, so I stocked up on a lot of stuff at once. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Reasonably priced rust-resistant chain?
I haven’t used on of these, but I’m generally suspicious of anti-friction coatings on chains and chainrings. Campagnolo started adding a coating to their chainrings a few years ago, and it was widely reported to wear off quickly. I properly lubricated chain should be able to resist corrosion well enough. They all wear out at about the same rate, in my experience. --Eric N campyonly...@me.com www.CampyOnly.com Campyonlyguy.blogspot.com @Campyonlyguy On Mar 27, 2015, at 7:29 AM, Jim Bronson jim.bron...@gmail.com wrote: Anyone tried one of these? http://kmcchain.us/chain/x9ept-eco-proteq/ http://kmcchain.us/chain/x9ept-eco-proteq/ Claims to withstand 650 hours of salt spray. Re: [RBW] Reasonably priced rust-resistant chain?
My reading of the site indicates the coating is for rust protection, not anti-friction. It's only $10 more than a regular KMC chain, I'll try one out when I run out of my current supply. Re: [RBW] Reasonably priced rust-resistant chain?
My daughter did her 5th grade science project on rust proofed bike chains. We bought her a bunch of new chains (including a Wipperman) and cut them into lengths for her to do all kinds of mean things to them. The coated 4NRTH brand did pretty well. The Wipperman was also excellent. The worst stuff we came up with was a mix of peroxide, salt and vinegar. I've still never ridden with a Wipperman. For some reason I was able to make myself pay for it for a school project, but can't pull the trigger for riding. Re: [RBW] Reasonably priced rust-resistant chain?
Bill: For some reason I was able to make myself pay for it for a school project, but can't pull the trigger for riding. You've got your priorities straight. An admirable school project, focusing on a single problem (corrosion). Bike drivetrains have a lot more going on that can also cause wear, i.e., lubrication, cleanliness, riding environment, etc. A highly corrosion resistant chain may not outlast a less resistant one if for instance lubrication cleanliness control life. I've never even thought about corrosion but I don't live where they salt the roads. Heck, it doesn't even rain enough around here. Peroxide, salt vinegar. That sounds pretty nasty without thinking about the chemical reactions. That's must have been a fun project for her. dougP On Friday, March 27, 2015 at 4:28:00 PM UTC-7, Bill Lindsay wrote: My daughter did her 5th grade science project on rust proofed bike chains.
