[TANKS] Re: If you're into automated fire control...

2009-05-22 Thread Modena

I spoke to a mate ages ago about our tanks and he basically mapped out
in his head how to do a gyro-style gun leveling system - point and
elevate the gun, engage "auto-leveling" mode and the system (using a
gyro/accelerometer) would constantly adjust the gun to keep it where
it was pointing even while you are moving the tank. Like most of these
things, easy to talk about, something else entirely to implement, and
something else entirely again to implement well

That's an interesting concept... Perhaps a device similar to real tanks'
hydraulic gun-leveling system can be employed. Instead of hydraulics, it
could use servos (linear actuators) or perhaps even pneumatic rams. However,
the electronics used to fine-tune the aim would be difficult.

FYI:

If your in the market for SLA's do yourself a favor and avoid
purchasing them from eBay vendor Ptron2. I bought four 20AH batteries
from them and had several issues:

- Packaged poorly which resulted in damage to one of the batteries.
- Batteries were over a year old when seller stated fresh stock, less
than 30 days old.
- Date codes and model numbers did not match.
- Arrived in a discharged state though advertised as being fully
charged before shipping.
- Did not ship in "factory sealed box" as seller advertised, instead
arrived
shoehorned into two small USPS Priority Mail flat-rate boxes.
- Unresponsive to emails and calls. Deletes emails unread.
- Like pulling teeth to get a refund.

I did a little research and Ptron2 does business under the following
names so avoid these sellers also.

- Battery Marketing Associates
- EBC battery
- Sunn Battery
- PDC Furniture

Pass the word, cross post, lets put a dent into this guys cashflow!

BTW, eBay seller SLABATTERY (whom I purchased 18AH SLA's from after
dealing with above) sent fresh stock with date codes as advertised.
Though they were also shipped in flat-rate USPS Priority Mail boxes,
they were larger boxes and the battery's were better packaged and
arrived undamaged.

[TANKS] Re: War in the Woods reconnaissance

2009-05-22 Thread Phil

This looks like the way to go. I doubt we will be operating in very
high winds. I just wonder whether it will stop (or rather slow down
sufficiently) paintballs? It is very light- 80 gm/sq m is exactly the
same weight as photocopying paper. Our local p-ball place uses netting
whichis thicker I'm sure but that's for permanent erection. It'd be
worth e-mailing them.

Has anyone in the group tried using netting?

I have a collection of aluminium poles left over from various trailer-
tent awnings (now departed to trailer-tent heaven) which are probably
suitable for poles.

DATES: How about 5/6 September here in Surrey guys? I'm warming up the
barbeque!
