[TANKS] Posi-Lock Connectors

2009-12-14 Thread Derek Engelhaupt
http://www.posi-lock.com/posilock.html

I bought some of these awhile back and couldn't find them for the longest
time.
I think they are great for making splices in the tank. I have no financial
interest
in them, but they make a very solid connection as opposed to using butt
slices
or bullet connectors. I'm ordering a variety pack just because I may need
them
for future projects. Just passing it on. The only downfall would be that
you have
to use stranded wire.

Re: [TANKS] Re: Wheels and Sprockets

2009-12-14 Thread Derek Engelhaupt
I tried to use my router to get round wheels, but I had issues. I did use
the router to round the
corners of the wheels once they were cut out using the table saw. The table
saw method was
much easier than I had imagined once I built a jig and clamped it to the
saw. I did round the
wheels as much as possible by making straight cuts near the traced pattern
lines before cutting
them on the tablesaw. Just because I couldn't get the router method to
work, doesn't mean it's
not possible. I just wasn't possible for me to do it. ;)

WARNING: I am about to ramble.

A long time ago when I was but a Trainee Factory Technician with British
Telecom, we had to do a short mechanical / metalwork course. We made a V-Block
and matching clamp and it introduced us to milling machines, shapers, lathes
and, most fun of all, the surface grinding machine.

Anyway, some weeks after we had completed this course a group of students from
the local college were invited in to use the BT workshops. They did the same
course as us but some of them weren't too bright. We used to enjoy watching
them because something always went wrong. The highlight came when one of them
forgot to engage the magnetic chuck on the surface grinder . . . On the first
pass the wheel grabbed his unfinished V block and hurled it at high, possibly
supersonic, speed across the workshop and embedded it an inch deep in the
plaster of the neighbouring office wall. We gave up watching them at this point
figuring that we were too young to die.

2009-12-14 Thread neroc
Clark my good man , I found the best way of making plywood wheels was
with a chop saw
http://www.rctankcombat.com/tanks/T051/22-large.jpg
I bolted the work piece down securely with a large nut and rotated the
wheel taking off smaller and smaller `chunks` . The foto doesn’t show
a wheel as such but the principle is the same .
I don’t like the idea of wheel making with a table saw , control is
vital .

Little bits that get cut off: have small piece of tape to hand and
once you've cut abit you stick tape on and it takes some of force when
it gets thrown out. Wont hold all the time but shouldnt come out too
quick. Masking tape also seems to work for cutting plastics like PVC.
We've found in school workshop sometimes blades get warm enough to
melt plastic as you go along but when you tape up along where your
cutting it doesnt do it as much unless your trying to melt it together
again.

I got one for christmas with a boots sticker on it. Not sure if boots
is about in the US but they sell make-up, soap/other get clean stuff,
hair dyes. General girls night out supplies i guess. Also have
pharmacy and camera booth thing. I guess that sorta proves they turn
up anywhere. If you do find one stick it near 2 babies approximately
1-1.5 years old. They both crawl and then eventually get up and walk
or run after it. Quite funny.

Hi Clark,

I bought a set from Canadian Tire on sale for about 90$ Cdn. I set my
drill press to 1800 rpm and I cut 1" marine grade ply without a
problem. Just take it slow. I've probably cut in the neighbourhood of
40 wheels at 4 1/2 inches and the holesaw is just as sharp as when I
bought it.

If you're expecting your local store to help you out with your new
