[TANKS] Discovery Channel

2009-12-20 Thread Frank Pittelli
I was recently contacted by a producer at the Canadian Discovery Channel
who would like to do a "short doc" on R/C tank combat sometime in the
next 6 months. Naturally, as a Canadian crew they are interested in
filming some of their countrymen in the hobby. So, if you're Canadian
and would like to participate, please send me your contact information
privately (email address, telephone number and address) and I'll forward
the list to them.

We have also made tentative plans for them to come to Maryland in the
spring to film one of our battles and to get some "color" interviews
with some of our more notable members. The producer's great uncle
destroyed a T-34 with a magnetic mine in 1944, so he is especially
interested in seeing the Tiger vs. the T-34 on the battlefield. He was
disheartened to hear that Mr. Tyng no longer owns the T-34, but I told
him we might be able to dig it out of mothballs for the filming.

He is also very interested in mounting a variety of cameras to the tanks
(turret mounted, rear mounted, side mounted, etc) to get plenty of live
action shots to go with the hand-held and tri-pod shots. I told him
that we'd mount whatever brackets he needs for the larger cameras
directly to the tank hull ... after explaining just how big these things
really are.

More news as the discussions progress.

Re: [TANKS] Re: 1:6 all up weight?

2009-12-20 Thread Derek Engelhaupt
I weighed the KV-2 hull which included the drive train, motors, and front
sprockets/shafts yesterday. It weighed in at 75lbs. Add 26lbs. for
batteries, 15lbs. for the turret and innards, another 26lbs. for tracks, and
like another 15lbs. for wheels/hardware should put it up in the 150lb.
range.

Thanks for the weights... Now that my catering season is over for a

Fred, why so thick for the hull? Forget paintballs, you could
probably bounce .22 short rounds :)

2009-12-20 Thread Fred Thomson
George awesome work!

The Ariete I'm building has a 1" square tube frame and the hull will
be gauge steel (5/32"). Guessimation completed beast will be around
the 200lb mark.

Cheers,
Fred

Re: [TANKS] Cutting PVC sheet

2009-12-20 Thread Derek Engelhaupt
I use all my standard woodworking tools including my table saw to cut it.
I would guess that you would want to use the higher speed. The faster
you make the cut, the less it will melt. The longer the plastic is exposed
to the hot blade, the more it will melt. The only time I've had any issues
with melting while working with it is when I was using my Dewalt roto tool
to cut circles or holes using cone type bits. Spade drill bits don't seem
to
cause any issues with melting for me. Standard drill bits do melt the
plastic
somewhat and the larger the bit, the more of an issue it is.
