[TANKS] KUBELWAGEN

2010-02-27 Thread Kelly G
Hey Guys,
I've been working on a 1/6th scale Kubelwagen recently and thought I would
share the progress I've made on it thus far.

Here is a link to some progress pictures: http://pbckt.com/sg.Ulm

I hope to have it finished in about a week or two.

Mr. Patron,
Are you feeling better now? I'm sorry that you did not understand
that each statement was a small joke. It was just my tired way of
trying to share some humor, somewhat like the observations of the late
George Carlin. There were no personal attacks intended. So, build your
tank, come to the Old Line State, and you can paint me up.
Perhaps like the way Patton wanted to face Rommel as mentioned in
the movie. Each one in their own tank and then have at it.
Okay, now to get back to my latest project. Building a new tank.

Phyl:
It just looked easier to mount the motors to the hull sidewall.
Also, that allows the drive axle to be mounted closer to the hull end
(looks more like the real tank)
I hope the chain doesnt get fouled with twigs and debris
The track drive axle is "dead" -- it does not rotate.
The drive sproket is made of UHMW polyethelene and rotates on the dead
axle - no bearings.
UHMW polyetheline is a good bearing material itself.

[TANKS] Paintball Stuff for Beginners

2010-02-27 Thread Mike Måne
I was just browsing around at the Great Walmart and saw some fair
prices on paintball equipment. I forget the brand, but there was a
marker/hopper/mask combo for only $60. It was cheaper than the Spyder
Victor I saw last year on the shelf. It was fairly light, about an
inch shorter than a Tippman 98, and excluded the CO2 tank which can be
advantageous. Also, it seemed like the fore-grip was detachable via
hex bolts. Walmart also had two 9oz CO2 canisters for about $10.

These items may not have superb quality, but Walmart seems to have
good prices for rudimentary parts when compared to sporting goods
stores.

Re: [TANKS] Re: Where to..

2010-02-27 Thread Gregory Kampjes
The Wiimote uses Bluetooth to communicate with the console. The light bar is
just there to help the Wiimote sync with where the TV actually is. You can
theoretically use it without a light bar, but I haven't tested it myself. If
you were going to stick a mini-/nano-/pico- ITX into your tank for whatever,
you might as well attach a Bluetooth dongle to it and use a Wiimote. Also
you'd be better off running Damn Small Linux rather than Puppy Linux =)

/|\ This from someone looking for "an exchange of ideas as MATURE

I think it's called humour (I'm Canadian and it IS spelled that way)
"tongue in cheek" or "with a grain of salt" if you prefer.

If you go back and re-read with your sense of outrage on hold, you
will find that basically you have been given some pretty good advice
on what works and what doesn't. Added up (collectively), you've got
thirty plus years of experience telling you just because you CAN do
something doesn't mean it will be practical. :-)

Personally, for my first tank I would stick with control systems that
are proven to work in this arena. Build it, take it out and abuse it
and get to know what kind of environment, stresses, and operating
conditions it will have to function in. After that, if you still think
it is a viable option, then build a test vehicle and have at it. Post
your successes and failures (and yes, you will have them).

I can see a couple of reasons right off why >I< wouldn't use it. The
Wii receiver is designed to sit in a motionless, (relatively) dust
free, moisture free, and vibration free environment. The pounding a
1/6th scale tank can take during the course of a test run, not to
mention actual combat, may surprise you. Picture taking your Wii
receiver up to waist height and dropping it, repeatedly. Yes, they do
generate those kinds of impacts and more. So there is the first
problem you have to over come.
The other battlers may not always be able to see your tank but they
will see YOU, your relative position, facing, and exaggerated arm/hand
movements they will know where your tank is headed and you may well
arrive only to find you've motored into an ambush.
From my limited experience with Wii, I think you will find that the
controllers don't react fast enough or with nearly enough precision.

While it might be 'cool' to do, IMHO I think you'll soon realize that
it just won't work in this scenario. Besides, there are lots more
'cool' things to put in a tank. For example...(and I'm a geek for a
living)

Webcams (driver's view, gunner's view, rear view) running under
Zoneminder on Puppy Linux with a Mini-itx motherboard and a 16gb
compact flash drive with a couple of inexpensive usb flash drives to
hold video captures (with sound).

Laser Sight (Yeah, I know the draw backs).

Functioning machine gun (airsoft?)

Mortars. :-)

Smoke screen generator.

...and the list goes on.

Cheers,
Fred "I'm sorry I ran over your tank. I was aiming for your foot."
