Re: [TANKS] Not tanks but an Obscure and Cyptic Aviation Quiz

2013-07-22 Thread Dave D.
Hey Pete,

#17. Got an assist from my wife, and she had clued me in some days ago and I
didn't listen!! She had mentioned Dickens then and I told her it was questions
about (mostly) WW II airplanes... Serves me right, so when she brought it up
again tonight I did a proper investigation... Never question the wife, I
find!! SO, Tiny Tim the ROCKET, I see now... LOL.

Not bad, but 7 is wrong. you need a type of sword and a wandering tribesman
and then you'll get a manufacturer of aero engines!, 8 is the wrong pirate, 10
is more of a language problem, 16 Think my Homerically!, 17 - I thought this
one was easy! Find the quote and you find the Big Rocket! 18 is entirely on the
wrong track. It's another Nickname question. 19 When I say bridge, I don't mean
anything that crosses a gap!

Now, I haven't looked at anyone else's replies...

Here are my answers, I hope I've got most of them...

1. Two... (RAF R.E. 8).2. A Bristol Aquila.3. A Mamba... would
that be a black one or perhaps a green one? LOL.4. A Rolls Royce Merlin
engine.

5. Bristol made the Jupiter radial engine for the Dornier J Gas Wal and
the J II Wal...6. You give it more thrust!! Swap out the GE J79's for the
RR Spey RB 168 15Rs...

7. My only guess is the SAS (Special Air Services).8. Blue... a
Vought F4U Corsair.9. An OBOE...10. All three made twin engined
bombers, although I'm guessing that you may be looking for more to this one,
just as I found with question #5...

11. A Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double WASP radial...12. A Douglas F-3D
Sky Knight, the damned drut!!13. In a SR-5 3.14. Is an AIR-2 Genie
(your first really "tough" question...IMO, gave me a great sense of
satisfaction finding this answer!!)

15. The LTV-A7 Corsair II, USAF - "D" , US Navy - "E".16. The Spartan
Cruiser G, or Mrk III G, hard to get a definitive photo...17. I haven't
the foggiest answer,
you were a bit too cryptic on this one, Pete! I tried rocket founding
fathers, Dr. Strangelove, the V-1 and V-II...

18. I'm guessing the SE 5a, flown by Edward "Mick" Mannock, since he's the
most famous British flying ace, and you being from the UK Pete... I also
considered Edward O'Hare and Eddie Rickenbacker...

19. This is the other one that has given me fits, I tried heavy transports
(C-130, Antonov An-225...) before giving up!. Abit too cryptic Pete, can you be
abit more forgiving, and telling?!!

20. A GAF Jindivik... great name!! Another one of my more proud
discoveries...

I'm still hoping to get answers for #17 and #19, but it's not looking too
good with the present hints... Also a better answer to #10 may be in order...

Thanks for the fun Pete!!

Dave D.

PS Oh yeah, too bad you couldn't supply us with an e-mail address, thus
ensuring that only YOU see our answers, but I realize that carries with it
certain risks.. I know they do that over here when you want to get the address
to a Tank battle site that they don't want to "broadcast"... Just a thought.

OK, I know we're all tank lovers on this forum but I think many of us
overlap into other areas of military interest. Anyway, I made this up a few
years ago when I realised that a normal general knowledge quiz is just too easy
with Google ans Ask.com available.
  So I got cryptic.
  And obscure.
Anyone getting all of these gains huge bragging rights and serious Kudos!

  (1) How many people can you get inside Harry Tate?

  (3) What snake do you associate with a gannet?

  (4) Where would you find Miss Shillings Orifice?

  (5) What links a Bristol to a Dornier?

  (6) What happens if you Spey a Phantom?

  (7) What links a sword with a wandering tribesman?

There's no tie to Duxford but, due to my target audience, there is a fairly
