Re: [TANKS] Torsion spring making

2016-09-25 Thread 'Mike Mangus' via R/C Tank Combat
4mm is pretty thick.  I used about that when making arms for a 1/6 Merkava and
it turned out to be way too stiff.  I could stand in the tank (230 pounds) and
the suspension would barely deflect.  SV015 used thinner wire which turned out
to be about right for a 50 pound tank.
The wire I used was hobby shop music wire for airplanes.  They were not heated
or annealed before bending.  I did break a couple yet most bends were just
fine.  Each wire was clamped in a vice and hammered over to bend.  If I was
doing it today, I would invest in a quality wire bender and use more radius to
keep the wire from kinking at the bend.

For a simple suspension system, it works very well.  It is not scale, but it
works amazingly well.  :)

Was wondering if anyone has an idea for bending up 4mm spring wire to make
torsion bars like Mike Magnus did for the SV015 spartan. Tried to bend one into
shape and it broke on the the second bend. Would spot annealing with a gas
torch help.

Painting of my Centurion in progress. I have the fortune to visit a garage
where old retried tank crews are holding some old tanks in mint condition.
They get out to shoot ones a year, and precipitate in shows around Denmark.
On my wisit i got 5 liters of the original green color with me , to use on
my Centurion mrk 5. Tery loved my tank, and i have promised to come back
when i am are finis building it ;.)
