[TANKS] Re: taking up the slack

2011-08-26 Thread McSpuds
Chris, I am not sure if it is possible to create the actual effect a
Slack Track design has. I will try to explain the system a little
bit and maybe that will help.

The Tiger used a system called Slack Track and also was what is
called a dead track.

A slack track is what you see when the track moves across the top of
the road wheels instead of being supported by return rollers. Some
people confuse this with Christie Suspension because they look the
same. What Christie Suspension does is allow the vehicle to move in
short distances on a road without the track... On most tanks you see
return rollers. These return rollers are not actually meant to help
keep the track Tight, but rather to help guide the track as it
returns to the front idler wheel or sprocket. The rollers are
normally located to the inside of the center guides thus keeping the
track straight. They greatly increase the mechanical complication and
thus added the risk of breakdowns more often. The tanks using slack
track designs were less complicated but tended to loose track more
often. The Slack Track also gave the tank greater speeds and
because of the overlapping road wheels, gave the tank a smoother
ride. But this was at a cost as the Germans found out the hard way in
the frozen plains of Russia as the overlapped wheels would fill with
mud and ice and would actually Freeze the tank to the ground.

What the Slack Track does in real life as to regards on the tight or
loose track being pulled tight is this

When the tank engine engages the transmission the loose track would
actually help the engine and transmission gain horsepower before
actually feeling the weight of the Tiger. This is why you see the
Tiger in real life footage Jump or Jerk when starting to move.
It's not the transmission jumping into gear, it's the result of the
power train hitting the weight of the tank shortly after starting to
move. In real life, the track is very, very heavy. You still see the
track tighten some, but it is not as much as you see in our scaled
tanks. There is just enough slack to enable the suspension system to
move up and down across terrain. The main reason for the Slack
Track was to enable the road wheels to move a greater distance, thus
providing a smoother ride.

The difference in Live Track and Dead track is that the live track
will actually assist the sprocket in pulling the tank forward. If you
see both types of track laying out on the ground you can see the
difference. In a dead track system the blocks will lay flat In a
Live track you will see the ends curl upwards. This curl is caused
by the bushings in the blocks. When the blocks are made they have a
offset molded into the bushing that causes this. When we were
checking our tracks while I was in the service, we would look for the
busted bushings by noticing the blocks that had a upside down v
appearance as the tracked was lain out. This was called dead track
blocks and we had to replace them all the time on both the M60 and
the M1.

oops sorry for the long winded explanation, I'm a old tanker..

I plan on using Frank's Carrier Wheel adjustment in the rear. Being
able to tighten the suspension from outside by turning a bolt sounds
very useful to me.

operating it. but as mcspud was saying, i won't (shouldn't) need it. i was

Great.  I am all up for all metal tanks. That;s the point, no? ALuminium

What is the overall length and weight of the tank and how thick are the
 aluminium sheets?

If you trust your tracks shift the motors to the fast gear however with 18 V
(12 + 6 in a row). This tank is light enough and you will be amazed with the
 speed.

 Have fun!

Actually Chrys it was running on 24 volts. Wy too much
power . Took off like a bucking bronco even with the batteries
centered. We will be tweaking the power curve this weekend. Hopefully
I'll have a few videos to post.

And Chrys, you do realize that you were the inspiration for making

I am pleased to announce that John's Panzer II has been officially
designated as T079 with construction photos and details at:

  http://www.rctankcombat.com/tanks/T079

A couple more tweaks are needed to the drive system, but it rolled
   around
under it's own power on Saturday, achieving a rolling chassis status.
John has a month or so to arm it and get the turret working before the
   fall battle.

[TANKS] New Builder Looking for Assistance

2011-07-27 Thread McSpuds
I have been building RC Ships, Aircraft, and cars for years. A friend
and I have been absent from our main hobby Warship Combat for some
years now due to time and funding restraints.

I am now retired from the Army and time seams to be something I have
plenty of, I wish I could say the same about funding but life is good
anyway.

We have been looking into how we could convert our old Small Gun
warship hobby into tanks. The safety of the guns has been an issue
that we can not get around so we are adjusting our thought process to
that of paintball. I remembered some folks talking about tanks back a
few years ago so we looked up Frank's Site.

I am going to be starting a 1/6 scale Tiger I, Late War Model. I also
think we are starting a Ferdinand as well for my friend.

My thought process is to build a plug for the turret and hull and make
a reinforced fiberglass hull.

Once built, a few times around the local park and we should have some
more building in this area.

Anyway, I have located some drawings of a tiger, but they are not very
clear or large enough to be scaled at Kinkos. The lines blur too
much. Does anybody have a 1/6th scale plans for a tiger I can
purchase or get a copy of? I would be eternally thankful.
