The drop off in the construction and auto industries makes me wonder if second hand tools are about to become dirt cheap, and if so where would I go to find them? [TANKS] Re: Got a Metal Brake and Realized I want to restart a whole new tank project.
Cool. I, too, quite like the Tiger II, which is why I'm building one (See Sancho Panzer under the Files section). I have a few suggestions. 1) There's an EXCELLENT paper model of the Tiger II with Henschel turret made by Modelik and sold here: http://www.papermodelstore.com/product_info.php?products_id=2411 This is a very well-done, decently large, high-quality product that is so detailed I would NEVER consider trying to assemble it (3D paper tracks articulated with tiny rolled-paper hinges...). That said, it is a VERY good reference for dimensions, angles, etc., as it is already dissected into flat sections, and is an absolute bargain at $10.99 (reduced from $15.99, so might be going out of print soon...) 2) FOA sells good-looking 1:6 plastic track and sprockets suitable for the Tiger II, if you're willing and able to shell out hundreds of dollars for them. (Me neither.) 3) George Bradford sells excellent scale drawings, a one-page 1:48 of the Tiger II with Henschel turret is about $15 or so (IIRC) at http://www.geocities.com/firefly1002000/1-48dwgs.html 4) I recommend casting some of the details like the engine vents, they're a bear to make by cutting holes in ply... Not going to inspire Neil to help you calling him a "tool" :-) Derek On Tue, Dec 23, 2008 at 2:51 AM, Pureteenlard wrote: > > > > "The right tool really makes life easy" > > Couldn't agree more - especially if the right tool is called Neil. > > > > --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You are currently subscribed to the "R/C Tank Combat" group. [TANKS] Re: Got a Metal Brake and Realized I want to restart a whole new tank project.
Ha similar thing happend to me the other day... I just started work on a new tank (SU-122), so I was cutting up the steel for the chassis with my trusty hacksaw. 3 hrs later all the steel was cut, I was 20lbs lighter, all was good. I welded it all up looked alright, but then when I went to test fit the axles they were not fitting anywhere close to where they were sposed too... Try again So I started cutting all the pieces again, on the first cut snapped my hacksaw blade, so I ran down to the Tool shop to get a new one, ended up coming home with a top of the line drop saw... So it went from $5 to $400 in a few minutes but I felt much better when I had all the pieces cut and assembled properly. The right tool really makes life easy. I can relate to your frustrations I learned to weld to build my Comet out of metal, I don't have all the proper tools and have even less time to work on it. BUTI WILL get it built..
