And yet more smiles! Glad to see this scooter motor controller biz working
out!

As for me, I've put the BT-7 on hold to work on the spin caster and mold
vulcanizer... I've also been bitten by the 1/16 scale bug But I'm
still here!

I would be very interested in one of these for the Ariete and would
love to retrofit the Bulldog. Do you have any data on cost?

Price is the first and last thing I think about ... I'm currently in the
middle of the process (prototype, design, testing, manufacturing) so I
won't know for sure until the actual boards are laid out. My target all
along has been dual-motor control for less than $100 and I now know that
goal is definitely attainable, now I just need to see how low the bar
can be set.

So how many amps would a 500W controller setup handle before melting/
 exploding?

Simply speaking, Watts = Voltage x Amps

So, a 500W controller can handle a different amount of amps depending on
the voltage being used. Scooter controllers typically come in 12V, 24V
and 36V models and we typically use 24V models so that we can power them
from two large 12V batteries in series. Therefore, at 24V a 500W
controller can handle approx 20A of continuous current.

Fortunately, the scooter world has it's act together and they almost
always rate motors and controllers the same way. So, if you have 300W
24V M01 motor, then a 350W or 500W 24V controller should have no problem
driving that motor in normal operation. The controller will start to
overheat if the motor is locked up for an extended period of time and
some scooter controllers have a built-in failsafe that simply cuts all
power in that case. Some more expensive ESCs limit power in such cases
to allow the vehicle to operate at a reduced performance level until the
overload condition has ended at which point it goes back to full power.

frank while i'm thinking of it, is there any way that when the controller
hits it's max it can be switched via relays to run directly off the battery?
i have an old Futaba 2 channel unit that does this to help prevent
unwanted heat and damage to the mosfets (sp?) and such
