sorry never weighed it, but I would guess at least 30kg if not 40. The
suspension could be softer, but be careful the softer you go the better in one
way, but the more risk of throwing tracks

Hey thanks for the info mate, what do you reckon your m113 weighs in at, I'm
probably looking at a all up weight of about 25-30 kgs.Do you have a good
deflection from the suspension?

My 1/6 scale M113 uses 6.3mm torsion bars, it could go a bit lighter depends on
total weight. The chassis is a 2mm steel bent tub and fairly heavy steel wheels
that I made.

After digging out SV15 and measuring the wire, it has 5/32" wire which
actually comes out to 3.9 mm. Looks like your call for 4mm wire is spot on. :)

 The SV15 chassis was originally for a 1/6 scale M113. :)

Hey thanks for the info mate. What would be a good size wire to use on a 1/6th
m113 fsv? Something about 2-3 mm be good enough? Am a bit limited on the sizes
I can get hold of for a decent price, 1,8 meters for$15 nz

Re: [TANKS] Torsion spring making

2016-09-25 Thread 'Mike Mangus' via R/C Tank Combat
4mm is pretty thick.  I used about that when making arms for a 1/6 Merkava and
it turned out to be way too stiff.  I could stand in the tank (230 pounds) and
the suspension would barely deflect.  SV015 used thinner wire which turned out
to be about right for a 50 pound tank.
The wire I used was hobby shop music wire for airplanes.  They were not heated
or annealed before bending.  I did break a couple yet most bends were just
fine.  Each wire was clamped in a vice and hammered over to bend.  If I was
doing it today, I would invest in a quality wire bender and use more radius to
keep the wire from kinking at the bend.

For a simple suspension system, it works very well.  It is not scale, but it
works amazingly well.  :)

Was wondering if anyone has an idea for bending up 4mm spring wire to make
torsion bars like Mike Magnus did for the SV015 spartan. Tried to bend one into
shape and it broke on the the second bend. Would spot annealing with a gas
torch help.

2016-09-23 Thread Jean St-Pierre
Are you using real piano wires?? I made some testing with 3/16 piano(5mm)
wires with no issues... But if it's like the wires for push rod in
airplanes sometimes you buy bad quality wires and it break every time!!
Maybe check on that.

Wouldnt annealing ruin the spring by definition? Youd then need to
re-harden them.
