Re: [TANKS] Re: High tempatures

2011-08-09 Thread Derek Engelhaupt
Ok, I was in the middle of a major network problem last night with our
Fortigate filtering internal LAN traffic on our network here causing all
kinds of havoc so I didn't really have time to fully explain why I'm
converting it to PVC. The wood I used on the M113 is thin (like 1/4"). The
way the front end was constructed with the motors sitting on the track
sponsons, is causing the wood to seperate from the torque of the motors
pushing against the upper hull. Basically the upper hull pieces on both
sides are pulling away from the front glacis plate. There is no easy way to
fix it at this point now that the hull is built. I like the way PVC
machines as opposed to wood and I don't have to use TiteBond to seal it
either. Seeing that I was also going to engineer the M113 as a floater, PVC
seems more logical than wood. So Steve is correct, it is in the design and
execution. My wood hull design was designed well enough until I mounted the
motors where I did. It was the execution that failed.

Wood not strong enough? PVC is weaker than plywood pound for pound. I
remember helping my stepson build a model bridge out of a few bits of
basswood for a school contest. It held 240 pounds of dead weight before
finally shattering. It's all in the design and execution.
