If any of you have input into PCC standards, please try to get a revision to the PCC report on provider neutral records for remote electronic monographs.
The suggested SMD "online resource" should be changed to "electronic text"; "online resource" is too general; it could be a game, or a program. At least the report advises having a 300 with SMD, and paging in curves, as opposed to AACR2's earlier idiotic omission of collation. In addition, the omission of the "(Online)" qualifier should be extended to all electronic series, or not implemented. The inconsistency of having it apply only to provider neutral records is silly. As nearly as I can find (given the loss of Bernard's online textual RDA index), RDA does not address these questions. I suspect the SMD "online resource" comes from the RDA carrier type list suggested for MARC21 337 (see below). But SMDs need not be these terms, e.g., "CD-ROM" would be the SMD, not "computer disc". And while we are pressing for change, lets get RDA's media type "computer" changed to ISBD Area 0's "electronic". Our clients would think a computer is a piece of equipment, not a media type.
