BTW, I see open source utility Ext2Read http://sourceforge.net/projects/ext2read/ allows a Windows machine to read and copy from Ext2/3/4 (including using LVM2) filesystems. Bruno: Do you need to use NTFS for the external drive? I suggest you try again using a Linux format such as ext3 and see if you have more success. My impression is that a high proportion of problems with rdiff-backup relate to backups to NTFS volumes (backup *from* NTFS generally works fine). Re: [rdiff-backup-users] IOError: [Errno 75] Value too large for defined data type
Hi Bruno, Since I am using FAT32 to backup from Ubuntu EXT3 (EXT4) with some success I will comment without much hard knowledge hoping that some more people will have more to say. I suppose you want to use NTFS for backup in order to at the same time produce MSWin compatible files. If not, just reformat your USB into EXT3 or 4. (and my further comments are superfluos) Since there seems to be less experience using rdiff-backup on MSWin and since FAT32 is a less complex and hopefully more secure filesystem than NTFS for Linux use I chose to backup to a FAT32 disk in order to simultaneously get MSWin-compatible files. I do employ some precautions regarding file naming and some special care at rdiff-backup use. I have earlier posted questions touching these problems that may be similar to yours (on FAT32, though) but may be avoided, so far, by using rdiff-backup --no-hard-links \ --override-chars-to-quote '"*/:<>?\\|;' \ $source $fat32usb but I do not understand fully how it functions - se further my earlier post at http://lists.nongnu.org/archive/html/rdiff-backup-users/2011-04/msg00013.html that yet nobody did respond to! Hope somebody knows more on this topic! Re: [rdiff-backup-users] Backup Fails
Thanks for the suggestion. But I don't think this is to do with permissions. Anyway as I have enabled "simple file sharing" I do not have a security tab. But since it is simple sharing (which I guess is equivalent giving full access for Everyone) my guess is that there shouldn't be an issue with permissions. Anyway as Nicolas said I think there is some problem with the file system. As I said in previous mail I could not find any errors in the file system when I used scandisk but when I tried to delete some folders I could not do it (even via windows explorer). This is because of long file names / directory paths. So when rdiff-backup does the backup it deletes some files/folders so that it mirrors to the source and sends the changes to the rdiff folder. Probably this is where it fails. So it is not exactly due to the files that the exception log shows. I guess when you said 2006 you meant 2009, right? because last stable version 1.2.8 was released in 2009/03/16. Anyway as I said, in the changelog it is mentioned that in v1.2.6 there is an issue under Windows for long file names / directory paths. This has apparently not been still rectified. Anyway because of all this I tried QtdSync which is based on rsync. This seems to be working for me (it does not delete but uses hard links for differential backups). Of course I agree rdiff-backup is a great application, it is just that it doesn't suit my environment. So thank you very much for all the help and big thank you for the developers.
