Re: [RE-wrenches] Federal Tax Credit

2009-09-09 Thread Jeff Oldham
I think we can assume that the $1500 cap listed is a mistake. However, I seem
to recall reading an early PR of the expected new laws and it said that you
could take the FULL cost of system to calc the 30% and other incentives (State,
City and Utility) would not be deducted allowing for a double dip in the
incentives. Now I'm hearing that you must deduct these other incentives from
your cost before applying the 30% fed. credit. I see nowhere on the Draft Form
5695 a place to list other incentives and to deduct them from the cost.

Can anyone provide the definitive on this and/or links to documentation?

Thanks,

[RE-wrenches] array grounding in Canada

2009-09-09 Thread Jerry Caldwell
Wrenches,

Canadian Electric Code rule 84-030 states that a direct power source connected
through an inverter shall not be grounded unless the inverter AC power is
separated from the supply authority system by an isolating transformer.

Our proposed system would be separated by a step up transformer to medium
voltage. The Canadian code doesn't seem to address floating arrays. Anyone
know of any precedents or other reasons why a floated array shouldn't be
allowable in Canada?

Thanks,
Jerry Caldwell

 Jerry,

 The Canadian requirements are
simplistic and based on the 1996
and prior NEC. Canada is simply not keeping their code up
 to date and
recognizing the fact that their western coast has
 significantly milder weather
and that thin films do not have the same temperature
 coefficients as
crystalline. I’m not sure they are enforcing this for all
 the big thin projects
going on in Ontario however. These are engineered systems
 that are not required
to follow the simplistic code requirements.

use one derate factor for the whole country?  Is the

 Jerry,

This might address what you are asking:

Rule # 50-006 of the Canadian Electrical Code increases the
 voltage rating of
the photovoltaic source circuit by 25% above the STC rated
 open circuit
voltage.  This would apply to the photovoltaic output
 circuits as well.

 Hope that helps,

Hello Wrenches,

I have a job on a 3.5/12 pitched rubber roof. We have 1.5” foam under
the EPDM, then the steel decking, then the purlins. Purlin spacing
supports adequate attachment points for a conventional rail mounted
system. I have 2 questions
1) A typical L-foot attachment to the roof would likely compress the
underlying foam and result in divets at each foot. What do you
recommend to disperse the load at the point of attachment
2) What type of screw do you recommend for attaching the L-Feet to the
purlins

[RE-wrenches] losses to competing angles in single strings

2009-09-09 Thread Nick Vida
hello wrenches.

I was wondering if any of you have any data on what the losses would be if you
had your string split with 2 different angles, but at the same azimuth. For
instance, string of 11 with 8 facing 180 south at 30 degrees, and 3 facing
south 180 at 45 degrees. I have heard that the voltages and currents would
differ and the IV curve would be inefficient as a string, but I dont know how
much of a loss would be expected.

thanks in advance, and hopefully I didnt miss anything in the archives.

thanks,

nick
