Re: [RE-wrenches] Generators and Grid-tie Systems
The issue of what will or will not hurt an inverter, when connected to a generator, does not seem to be resolved. The fail safe method, of course, is to connect to the line side of the transfer switch. Other than that, there are varied views. There are systems in operation that intentionally AC couple generators to on grid inverters. A post on the List had linked to an article about such a system, but so far I can't find the information. Has anyone else had problems with isolation relays? This was a recommended method that didn't work for me. Re: [RE-wrenches] Irradiance data
You might check in with the monitoring companies you work with to see if they can pull up the data from one of your sites with an irradiance meter. You might already have this in an admin view. If not, maybe someone on this list does. NREL or Sandia may also collect this data on an ongoing basis. While I¹m not sure who you¹d contact, there are extensive resources listed at the end of the Production Modeling article in SolarPro. That issue will post online this week start mailing very soon. I also suspect 3TIER has the data you want (http://www.3tier.com/en/), but I¹m not sure they¹d give it away. Since you¹re not planning on making money with the data, maybe they¹ll share. Doesn¹t hurt to ask... On 3/3/10 12:57 PM, Andrew Truitt atru...@gmail.com wrote: David - Thanks! This is great as an average for comparison. It depends on the generator. Yesterday I ran a kohler 12 res with a parallel connected sb7000. I monitored the freq during the connect time and it stayed on the money. The blinking green lite on the sb told me it was going to connect. At this time I stopped since I was not ready to experiment on my customers system. I do believe , in principal, it should work as just outlined in the previous post. Re: [RE-wrenches] Generators and Grid-tie Systems
What brands of generators have you had good experience synching with off-grid inverters (Outback, Magnum, Xantrex)? We sell Kohler, but we'd like to offer an alternative (that we could sell). I've heard good things about Honda, but I've heard that you need to be a Honda dealer to sell them. Any suggestions? Re: [RE-wrenches] acre/MW
Thanks Scott and Kirpal for your responses as they were very helpful. Mike - Original Message - From: Scott McCalmont To: RE-wrenches Sent: Tuesday, March 02, 2010 11:36 AM Subject: Re: [RE-wrenches] acre/MW It will depend on the technology of the modules, too--whether you're using monocrystalline, poly, or thin-film. I recently spec'ed a thin-film design which worked out to 150 kW per acre. With more efficient modules you could be 50% better, so your 5 acre/MW number is reasonable. It also will depend on where you are building the plant. At higher latitudes, you might want the array to have a greater tilt, which probably means you will space the rows out more to minimize inter-row shading. Scott Scott McCalmont, P.E.
