Jim,

You have probably seen this already but it’s worth a mention here. Good article
in SolarPro magazine April/May “Optimal PV-to-Inverter Sizing Ratio”.

SB8000US only good for 480 Vac, we’re tying in at 208.

11 strings [11 modules per string] has been calc’d to be OK (600vdc) for
record low -4 fahrenheit (-20 celsius).

I think the big concern as mentioned is getting the Voc high early in the AM to
wake the inverter up, also maintaining the Vmp later in the day to keep it
running for as long as possible into the late afternoon/ evening.

Will those extra kWh gleaned in the early AM/ late PM over the course of 365
days be more than the kWh clipped during peak production times with the 9.075
kWdc?

NYC average summer highs between 79 and 84 fahrenheit early june-late august.
Sunlink rack @ 10° on a silver-painted built-up roof.

Time-of-use utility $ peak-shaving is not an issue here.

Thank you

  Wrenches,
There was a thread last year about Service Magic's lead generation service.
At that time, the strongest message I heard was not to let them in, because
their leads are seldom good and you can't get rid of them. I don't think that I
recall a single positive review of them on this list.

Has anything changed since then? What's the current story, please?
  Thanks,
  Allan

Re: [RE-wrenches] overfeed 7kW gridtie inverter or drop a mod per string?

2010-04-20 Thread wes kennedy
Hi Jim,

I like using one of the design emulators for just this reason. PVSYST and
PVSOL.  You can model each scenario and see how the numbers crunch. You import
historical weather data for the region to get as accurate as possible.

You mention the silver painted roof, these emulators allow you to input albedo
affects, too.

Both packages offer free trial periods, so you could run just this case for
free.  If you like them then you spend the money for the license.

Wrenches,
PVWatts does not accurately predicate Unisolar and Sunpower module
performance because it uses a generic single crystal silicon solar
module power temperature coefficient (I think -0.4% per degree C). Does
someone have the technical paper that specifies PVWatts module
temperature coefficient? Thank you.

Once you sign up, they start charging you, even for bogus leads. You never get
your money back, just credit (if you're lucky) to get more bogus leads.
Also, they waste a lot of your time with different sales reps calling you, but
never talking to each other, their internal communication is zilch.
Here's a quick breakdown of our experience:

cash out of pocket: around $40
time talking to reps, paperwork:20hrs
Leads generated:a Renter wanting more
information onthat solar stuff, who was about an hour away.
Aggravation in dealing with a company that really seems to be unscrupulous:
Priceless.

I was already suspicious before the first lead, but decided to see.
As soon as I saw they had zero filtering of the leads, I immediately moved to
dump them, which took weeks, BTW.

Along with the occasional solar lead, you may be receiving names of people

Here's a quick breakdown of our experience:

cash out of pocket: around $40

Leads generated: a Renter wanting more information onthat solar stuff,

Aggravation in dealing with a company that really seems to be

Priceless.

I was already suspicious before the first lead, but decided to see.
As soon as I saw they had zero filtering of the leads, I immediately moved
to dump them, which took weeks, BTW.

Has anything changed since then? What's the current story, please?

Re: [RE-wrenches] KD135 source?

2010-04-20 Thread Starlight Solar Power Systems
Are you looking for grid tie or the J-box? I have some of the J-box 135's.
Just FYI, the 135's are a larger module at 59.1 x 26.3. The discontinued
120's, 125's and 130's were all 56.1 x 25.7.

  Wrenches,
A distributor told me today that Kyocera is currently out of KD135s,
backordered until next month. With relatively few good 12V modules available
these days, anyone know of a good distributor with KC125, KC130, or KD135s in
current stock?
  Thank you,
  Allan

Re: [RE-wrenches] Modules with PV wire

2010-04-20 Thread Jeff Yago
This is another example of the manufacturers doing whatever and let the installers just deal with it. We just finished a campus wide lighting of all remote signage with custom solar lighting systems. We made up pre-packaged mini-pole mounts with the modules attached so when we got out on site there was only final wiring hookup required. However, several of our systems required different module sizes due to differences in wattage and number of lights. The campus was a 2 hour drive each way from shop, and when we started to assemble everything we found half of the modules had solar wire pigtails and half had USE-2 pigtails.

The pre-assembled M/F wiring extensions we ordered to save having to make our own were also a mix of wire types, and at least half of these wires would not fit through the 2-hole cable connectors we normally install on the combiner boxes as they all had a different outside diameter. Some of the other cables fit very loosely in the 2-hole connectors which will not be a very good moisture barrier. We tried cable glide goop on the largest cables and they still would not fit through these connectors.

This little mix-up lost us another day in field work and a very long return trip that should not have been require.

As westart receivingall this non-standardized stuff, better check everything twice.
