Re: [RE-wrenches] Mobil inverter with Gen support

2013-02-06 Thread Maverick Brown
Is it possible for you to add a 30A contactor with 120Vac coil (which connects
to the grid) to create the ground to neutral bond via the normally closed
contacts?

Thank you,

Maverick

[RE-wrenches] finding array ground faults

2013-02-06 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
Hoo boyI've got a tough one here. Trying to troubleshoot an array
ground fault with a system that has 14 strings mounted on a metal roof with
the whole roof and metal framed building being common to ground.

Can anyone recommend any diagnostic tools out there to troubleshoot and
locate ground faults?

Thanks,

Seperate the strings, test the voltage to ground, that will tell you the
faulty string and where the fault is. The voltage to ground divided by the
Voc should tell you how many strings away the fault is.

Re: [RE-wrenches] finding array ground faults

2013-02-06 Thread Bill Brooks
Marco,

This should be fairly straightforward. If the whole roof is truly grounded,
you have nothing to worry about. If it is not well grounded, then you have
cause for pause.

I would recommend the new Megger MIT410 (or420 or 430) device. It has a 50V
setting which is hugely beneficial for testing surge arrestors as well as PV
arrays.

I assume this does not have an obvious fault, or you would not have asked.
If you can't find it with a dry megger, it is time to get out the garden
sprayer with a mild soap solution and start spraying down the array
methodically, one section at a time, while someone else operates the megger.
With all that grounded metal, it should be easy to find. Ground is your
friend when searching for ground faults.

Bill.

Southwest Windpower will continue to support valid warranty claims.

These exciting developments will allow Southwest Windpower to focus our

SWWP is going through some shake-up in the company. People have been laid off.
They have sold off the Air products to Primus Windpower.

They still have the SkyStream but I heard of the other sell offs but I don't

2013-02-06 Thread Dave Palumbo
A month ago I was searching for an Energy Star RF of standard kitchen appeal
for my rental house and with the Wrench groups help I found one I am very
pleased with so far.

Whirpool WRTL9SZY 19 Cubic Foot, Freezer on top no ice maker. $ 800
delivered

Energy Guide Yellow Tag states 345kWh/Yr.

To date I have measured (Kill A Watt meter) 741 WH/Day which projects out to
271kWh/Yr.

RF is located in an area that is 70 to 78 degrees in this small wood stove
heated home.

[RE-wrenches] message 1

2013-02-06 Thread Great Northern Solar
Dear Folks:

Generally with wire runs being short from battery to inverter (in this case SMA
SI) we prefer the largest conductor possible.

Inverters don't like being choked off by wire loss when big loads or
significant charging needs the amps.

2 X 2/0 sounds like a great minimum to me, and yes I am a fanatic.

Yet the wire run being short means the cost for wire is not huge.

Our battery based inverters tend to run very well.

C.

Re: [RE-wrenches] finding array ground faults

2013-02-06 Thread Carl Adams
Marco,

I second Chris' suggestion. Disconnect all strings at the combiner. Check
VOC PV+ to ground, and PV- to ground on each string, and PV+ to PV-. This
should point you to the faulty string. If the string consists of 10
modules, each with VOC of 30 volts then you should see +300V from PV+ to
PV- (assuming negatively grounded array), and 0 volts PV+ to ground, and 0
volts PV- to ground. If you find a string where you see +60V from PV+ to
ground, and -240V PV- to ground, your ground fault is on that string and is
likely between the 2nd and 3rd module as you move from PV + of the string
to PV-. (2 * 30V voc = 60V) (8 *30V voc = 240V).

Hope this helps
