Next SEI class PV351L
is
in Aug, the cost is high , but they limit the instructor to student ratio
to 1:4 and the entier class to 12 people to make sure everyone gets a
chance for hands on with all the fancy new tools!

It is awesome!

Re: [RE-wrenches] outback fx service work

2013-06-13 Thread Steve Higgins
Hey Guys...

Hope I'm not over extending here, but be careful with the 9V batteries. In my
years with various inverter manufactures I found that sometimes if you have 9
volt batteries and they are a bit on the older side they may not have enough to
power up the inverter.

So, what I've done is use the 12volt flashlight batteries, or even in a pinch a
10 amp inline fuse to test the inverter.

Another tip for working on the Outback: Use 9V (smoke alarm size) batteries
ganged together to create test voltage for the inverter. They can be joined
"head to tail" to get enough voltage to turn the thing on and have it self
test, but if you screwed something up the amperage isn't enough to smoke
anything.

Good luck.

Hi Jeff W.Great!  Thanks - just
what the doctor ordered.Question though - do the pass thru lugs
allow then even more than 70 Amps backfeed?  In essence like a supply
tap?  In the Eaton catalogs it still shows "200 Amp rated" on
that unit.  I haven't been able to find a schematic that shows the 270
Amp rating applied to exactly which bus bars or conductors. But I
take your word for it!  Though the Service Entrance electrician would
love to see specs or drawings confirming that.I'm glad to
further look for docs but thought you might have already nabbed them? Thanks

[RE-wrenches] Best practices for genset on premises

2013-06-13 Thread Nathan Charles
We do a lot of installation in Agricultural settings and a design pattern I
keep running into is a large genset on premises, the transfer switch is the
first peice of service equipment and the customer wants to interconnect in
a remote sub panel because they don't want to run another set of lines. We
generally convince them to run another set of lines to interconnect in
front of the transfer switch because that seems to be the best way of
dealing with NEC 702.5.

Inevitably the question comes up, can we use our PV generation to reduce
our generator load. Most of the gensets we deal with don't have a
frequency range that would make it an option but we've run into a few cases
where it’s a 300-750KVA genset and it theoretically might be possible if
there was some protective relaying or something.

There is going to be a size that this makes sense, but I'm not sure what
is. Has anybody run into this scenario and have any advice of what size
it's worthwhile dealing with the design issues or other good ways of
dealing with 702.5?

Re: [RE-wrenches] 200 Amp Main Equip for 60A Solar

2013-06-13 Thread Dave Click

Jeff,

This has been sent out on the list a few times but I don't remember
anyone sharing their personal experiences with it:

http://solarprofessional.com/articles/products-equipment/product-launches/milbank-offers-load-tap-connector

200+ 60 for a meter main is trickier. The $1100 (list) Schneider
RC2M200S lets you do a 200A main and a 50A PV breaker (interconnecting
on line side of the 200A), which may be close enough for you depending
on your system details (10kWac @ 240V -> >52.1A breaker).

Hey Wrenchies,

Anybody know of a 200 Meter base with lugs rated for dual wire so we can
do a 60 Amp Supply side solar feed on a 200 Amp service?

Or does anyone know the right equip to get to ensure we can install 2
dual lug taps on both single lugs? (a meter base with enough room for
the T lugs?)

Or better yet any integrated 200 Amp Service / Meter equipment that has
an accessible spot to tap 60 Amps for a Disconnect on the meter side of
the Main?

I have 2 SB 2500Us existing and want to add a single SB 5000TLUS - I
show rated output to be 46 Amps total and hence a 60 Amp needed.

Advice my esteemed colleagues?

Thanks,

Jeff
