[RE-wrenches] VFX inverter vertical

2013-09-15 Thread William Miller
Friends:

We have not one, but two jobs coming up in the near future requiring we
mount FW500 base plates 90 degrees rotated from the norm. In all my years I
have never had to do this and now it is twice. I am trying to wrap my head
around this.

I hate to have breakers actuate sideways so I hesitate to just rotate the DC
cabinet with the base plate. I may keep the DC cabinet vertical and punch a
hole in the top to accommodate connections to the inverter. I want to
ensure that we have room for an additional inverter so I will try to
position the KO as far to one side as possible to see if another inverter
can fit.

We rarely use the Outback AC cabinet any more anyway, so we will just use
the standard QO panel(s) mounted at the top right side up. They may hang
off of the base plate somewhat, but we deal with that regularly.

Anyway, that is my tentative plan. Anyone else deal with this. Have any
photos?

Thanks in advance,

William Miller

Dave,

I have sold 8 Eco-Gens so far and first impressions are great. I
wasn't aware of the govt funded research but it makes sense. I have
one installed on top of Herrick Mtn doing an average of 4 hours a day
backing up a transmitter site. This winter will be the test. So far
we have almost 500 hours on it (first oil change coming up) and no
problems. This is a remote site with only snowmobile access in
winter. The gen is doing great on fuel economy. About .7 gph at 2300
watt load.

Looking for a good quality, long lasting, LP gas genset for my
off grid rental house. 6 to 8kW. Full power at 120Vac would be

Kohlers, and the like, have been holding up for off grid use
over the past few years.

This for northern Vermont where even with C/8 PV to battery
charge rate we need to run the generator about 250 hours per
year as the cloud cover is dense for weeks at a time.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Off Grid LP Gen advice

2013-09-15 Thread Allan Sindelar

John,
If I understand correctly what was explained to me by Generac, the
research wasn't government-funded. The Propane Education and
Research Council is an industry trade group. I was curious,
though, so checked into it on its website:
"PERC was authorized by the U.S. Congress with passage
of the Propane Education and Research Act (PERA), Public Law
104-284, signed into law on October 11, 1996. In a referendum
soon afterward, propane producers and marketers overwhelmingly
approved its formation."

and: "PERC’s operations and activities are funded by an
assessment levied on each gallon of propane gas at the point it
is odorized or imported into the United States. The assessment,
authorized under PERA, is now four-tenths of a cent per gallon."
I also found a fact sheet on the development of this generator
at http://www.propanecouncil.org/WorkArea/DownloadAsset.aspx?id=3827.
