[RE-wrenches] Adding generators to PV systems

2018-01-11 Thread Wayne Irwin
Hello All,

We have several customers adding generators to their homes on which we have
previously installed PV systems.

Historically most generators didn't produce a clean enough 60Hz sinewave to get
the inverters to feed back.

However, with the generator technology improving and the introduction of
inverter generators, I'm concerned that if the inverters feed back to the
generator it will smoke the stator.

I'm wondering if any of you have any experience/issues? If so, what solutions
or recommendations do you have?

Thanks,

Wayne Irwin,

[RE-wrenches] automatic transfer switch

2018-01-11 Thread jay
HI all,

I’m doing a project with 2 radians in a redundant configuration.
Each one would go into a transfer switch to power the common load.

I’m looking for a good, fast transfer switch. 30amp 120/240 is fine.
And maybe a mechanical feature as well.
Code isn’t an issue
Will be off grid, remote mexico.

There is the Iota of course, but was just looking for options.

thx in advance,

jay

Re: [RE-wrenches] Administrative stuff

2018-01-11 Thread Michael Welch
Hi gang. Contact me off list with any questions or concerns.

We've finally got our file attachment problem at least kinda sorta worked out.

When attaching files, consider the following:
1. The maximum message size (includes headers, message body, and attachments)
is 2 megabytes, and the smaller the better for our friends with slower Internet
connections.

2. Please ATTACH your images etc. rather than embedding them within the text.
That ensures that ALL email programs will be able to easily view the images.

3. Fixing this has disabled some content filtering, making sending spam and
viruses to the list just a little bit easier. So please be cautious with links
you click and that sort of thing, to keep your computers as free as possible of
viruses and to make sure you don't accidentally get phished.

Thanks for your patience, friends.

[RE-wrenches] Wire management with S5! Railless System

2018-01-11 Thread Mike Kocsmiersky

In the past I determined that anything above a 4 pitch on standing seam roofs
would require rails.  Just too difficult otherwise.  I would recommend the use
of rails all the time however on larger systems, there can be significant added
cost.  Because the seams don't align as a perfect multiple of the module length
or width, you do end up having some modules with a greater spacing between
supports than perhaps the module spec sheet requires.  Additionally I have
found that for multiple home run strings, a stainless steel retaining clip
dunked in rubber (mfg that way), is a good way to bundle the wires.  Even
better is to use a flexible conduit with a slit to run the home run wiring up /
across under the array, where the conduit supports are on S-5 clips.  Sorry
don't have access to pictures at the moment.Mike KocsmierskySpirit Solar

Add my voice to the “never without rails” chorus.

1) S-5 clamps are only as good as the standing seam they are on. At least rails
spread out the stresses and avoid large point loads.

2) Ice likes to slide. Rails give some height above that.

3) Rail height gives better ventilation and hot weather performance.

4) Module width is never an even multiple of roofing pan width. No rails means
inevitably some modules will be “diving boards.”

5) Without rails, getting the modules to an even height is a giant PITA. Takes
forever. I did it once and never again.

Ray - I agree with the others that S5 clamps with rails is the way to go on
standing seam roofs. We buy our S5 clamps through LMCurbs and I've found
their pricing and service to be good: http://www.lmcurbs.com/

We go though a good deal of effort to determine the exact standing seam
make/model and then procure the S5 clamps that are specifically designed
for the roof. Even then, sometimes the seams need to be compressed a bit to
slip the clamp over. You can squeeze the seams with a large pair of channel
locks with a piece or cardboard to protect the channel lock teeth from
marring the metal standing seam coating.

If you still need to run PV wires along modules frames without rails,
HellermannTyton might make a product that will work for you:

You might be able to get a solar sampler kit from them to find a good fit.

We were interested in their H5000/5001 series inverters--they look good on

We have found that the SnapNrack rails and using the
SnapNrack Wide Base Seam Clamp w/L-Foot, 242-05151

is priced right and has fewer hassles then the older S5s. Wire management also
has been addressed by SnapNrack

Hi Ray

Here are a ton of newer clips that carry 2-many wires, in different
configurations, straight, 90 degree etc
Most in SS some now in synthetic.
And yea it’s kind of a pain with that type racking.

Talk to Bryan at PV cables, he stocks lots of them.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Wire management with S5! Railless System

2018-01-11 Thread Jamie Rennie
Wire management on railess systems is a challenge. In the past I have tried
to do as much of the wire management as possible before laying the panels
by zip tying the leads to the side of panels and strategizing string
routes. Also used flat trays like this for home runs:

There are lots of creative ways to use the S-5 attachment to run home runs
or install straps at key places. S-5 people are really helpful if you send
them a pick of your roof. We get ours from Soligent.
