Re: [RE-wrenches] Testing AGMs

2018-02-24 Thread Ray
I agree, I usually steer full time off grid customers away from AGM, but
for remote sites that might not be attended for months at a time, AGMs
do have a purpose.  We've had good luck with Full River. Load testing is
one really long way to test; I usually just have the customer do load
testing with the system and the Trimetric or other SOC meter.  Run a
good charge cycle, then turn off the solar for a couple of days, and see
what kind of capacity is left.  Also always good to check voltages of
all the batteries, and see if there are weak or dead cells.  Dead cells
show up pretty easily, they will test 1.5 to 2 volts lower.

My latest toy purchase was a FLIR camera, it has been extremely
helpful.  You can literally see the dead cells within the packs. They
show up noticeably warmer than surrounding cells.  If you see anything
like that, you know the pack is probably toast.  Finally, a really good
test is how old they are.  If they are rated at 300 cycles to 80% DOD
battery and they are 5 years old, they're probably gone as well.  Most
AGMs do not have long cycle lives. Folks don't call to complain about
batteries unless they're not working right.  I listen to my customers;
they know better than anyone when the system isn't working the same, and
after checking for new loads, and proper charge settings, its almost
always batteries.

Wrenches,
We have a client with a string of sealed L16s and he believes he may have
a weak or failed cell.

What’s the best way to test or check these batteries, since there is no
electrolyte to draw out.

We don’t install many AGMs, in fact, steer the client away from them,
usually.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Radian throughput power

2018-02-24 Thread Lones Tuss
Hello Lones here.
When an ac source is accepted by the inverter. The rely connects the ac input
directly to the ac output. The relay is (should be) protected by a 50 amp
breaker
If there is an ac load of 8KW or 33 ac amps the remaining current is available
to be used by the inverter for battery charging. If the load increases above 8k
charging is reduced to honor the loads first. If the loads chew up all 50 amps
charging will be reduced to zero. Above 50 and the breaker should trip or
damage to the relay may result.
It is possible to use Support Mode. This sets a limit on the amount of current
passing through from the source to the loads. Any amount above the set point
will be supplied from the batteries. If the ac input current is set to 25 ac
amps. Any load above the 25 amps will come from the batteries. Sustained loads
above this adjustable set point could possibly deplete the batteries. If the
load drops below the 25amp charging will resume.
It is possible have an ac source and deplete the batteries.
Loads first Charging 2nd.
I hope this helps.
Take Care All

You are missing the charging of the battery! That is where (your numbers) the
12KW - 8KW can go!

[RE-wrenches] Radian throughput power

2018-02-24 Thread frenergy

Wrenches,

I spoke with tech support at Outback recently and was told
the max output of the Radian at the output terminals is 8KW, even if
there is an external AC source connected to one of the AC IN terminals
of the Radian.

However, on page 18 of the GS8048 manual:  "When it
(transfer relay) closes the L1 input and output terminals become
electrically common."  ...same for L2 input and output. then, "the relay
contacts are limited to 55 amps per phase or leg".  Since there is no 55
amp circuit breaker to protect that relay a 50 amp 2 pole breaker would
be used.  This means you would have 50A X 240 Vac (12KW) at the output
terminals, correct?

            Am I missing something?  Thanks,

Bill
