Re: [RE-wrenches] module level control for offgrid

2019-02-02 Thread Lones Tuss
Hello Jay and All
Concerning module level shutdown.
Tigo has conducted testing and has validated the FM60/80 charge controllers
with their TS4 Module Platform

Imo's FireRaptor has been tested by OutBack and can be used successfully in
combination with FM60/80/100 the ICS Plus and the Skybox 5048

HI All,

Well its the new year and Module level control is here. 690.12 (B)(2)

Does anyone have any updates as to products that work with CC's that meet it?

Thx

Re: [RE-wrenches] VFX slow transfer from gen

2019-02-02 Thread bruce
Found some carbon on the BBus breaker and terms. Cleaned and tightened. Seemed to make the transfers seamless in manual start/stop, and got both inverters to read much closer to the same voltage without calibrating. We'll keep fingers crossed it works as well in auto stop after battery charge. Just goes to show all terminations should be checked every year. This system is about 12 years old and I just took it on a few months ago. Thanks for the input!Bruce

Single inverter or master slave? Is there an AGS?

Re: [RE-wrenches] module level control for offgrid

2019-02-02 Thread Dan Fink
Jay; Off grid we have worked through some strange requirements over the
last few years, and in most it had a lot had to do with how electrical
inspectors interpreted NECthey are as puzzled as we are. There were
AHJs calling for giant remote-trip DC breakers on battery banks to comply
with rapid shutdown (I think that fire went out when it was pointed out
that meant all backup generators needed to be integrated into rapid
shutdown too, a no-go) And AHJs who said that because the conduit from a
ground mount array went 4 feet up the outside of a building to the first
disconnect before penetrating the building, that meant the PV array was "on
the building." And local solar companies frantically pounding in 250.47(D)
aux grounding electrodes below every PV array, even though that's a recipe
for disaster.

I'd boil it down to keeping good lines of communication open between PV
installers and the AHJs and being able to discuss frankly what exactly the
problem some of these more mysterious code items are trying to solve.

HI Dan and Kienan,

Yea I understand some of the work arounds, but its not always possible to work

So sounds like from the crickets that things are not quite ready yet. Better

A very common way around rapid shutdown for off-grid systems especially
with ground or pole mounts is using a "power shed" for the BOS
components.if it is not inhabited / uninhabitable then rapid shutdown
is not needed per NEC 2017.

Re: [RE-wrenches] module level control for offgrid

2019-02-02 Thread Kienan Maxfield
Jay,

I'm interested in this too, but I don't have any good answers (I was hoping
that someone else would have responded by now). I know that this doesn't answer
the question... but my only comment is to use a pole mount whenever possible.
Rapid shutdown only applies to systems on a building or where the PV system
conductors penetrate beyond 3' into a building before reaching the PV system
disconnect. For a pole mount, as long as your equipment is on the outside wall,
you can easily get to the PV system disconnect within 3' of wire length from
the building penetration so no rapid shutdown of any kind is required. The
battery system is considered a separate system in the 2017 code and there is no
requirement for rapid shutdown of any kind in that system.

Thanks,
Kienan
