Re: [RE-wrenches] SMA SB 2500U

Jay:

The back story is sometimes useful. Thank you for filling in the details.

I have a soft spot for community radio. I also have some used, working SB 2500U
inverters on the shelf. I’d be happy to send you one. Contact me off list.

The used inverter offered came from an art-house theater. These were the units
I ordered for 208 by mistake and had to send back to be made 240. They were
replaced by TL-21 inverters. See this link if you are curious.

https://www.thepalmtheatre.com/about-us

I agree that in most cases we need to comply with updated standards. I have on
occasion bent the rules to apply an in-stock inverter that does not meet the
latest and greatest requirements to replace an older unit. For example I am
pretty lenient with clients that want to remove an antiquated AES1000 or other
inverter and put in something newer without stirring the hornets-nest of
utility or building department approval.

Dear wrenches

I did not include the back story as it is not relevant to my inquiry. However
given the comments I decided to include it in that it will hopefully clear up
any confusion.

Where I used to live, the local community radio station ( poorly funded) has a
old PV system with you guessed it a SMA SB2500U that was installed brand new a
long time ago.
It failed and a replacement was located for $150. But it was 208 and not
240vac, which someone didn’t catch when ordering it.
A buck/boost transformer allows it to work but adds tare losses that we were
trying to remove.

It is my understanding that a like for like component swap is covered under
code rules. Regardless, no inspection or calls to the county permit office were
made or will be made. One of the great joys of living very rurally.

Back to my original post about how to or if it’s possible to convert a 208 to
240vac SMA SB2500U, which appears to be no, thanks to all who contacted me.

Better off with a SB5.0-41 and if you need RSD then add that in also.

"IEEE 1547-1" certification is required at least in the New England ISO
document which our utilities abide by. IEEE 1547 does not qualify. My local
utility denied my approval for installation last year of a old SMA2500U
inverter for this reason.

Yes, these should only be used to get a grandfathered system back up and running(no ARC fault just GFDI) or a off-gridder that is not going to have any concerns...Oh, and back when we were doing these at SMA in the test area we had a "special" rom set that made this conversion from 240 to 208v easy.If one wants to go back to 240vac from a 208vac unit I use sunny data and re-program the AC window using Sunny Data and PC.Note; the data label should/needs to be be marked up to reflect what the Inverter actually is!I would not use a XFMR.Louis, RE Repair/Solar Cowboyz

Re: [RE-wrenches] Ferrules crimps

2021-05-18 Thread August Goers
Hi William,

Years ago we were buying ferrules and ferrule crimpers to deal with the
extra fine stranded conductors coming with microinverter trunk cabling at
the time. I think it was PowerOne / ABB. Anyway, if that's the type of
ferrules you need, we got them from ferrulesdirect.com.

Ferrule crimper FD2810HX - hexagonal profile crimping tool 28 to 10 AWG
N60012 - 10AWG ferrules
N40012 - 12AWG ferrules

This is not to be confused with the Ideal / Buchanan splice caps and
insulators being discussed on this list recently:

2021-05-18 Thread Luke Christy
William,
I have used various brands of both ferrules and crimp tools. Most of the
ferrules I have used are German-made by the Weidmuller brand, these seem to be
private labeled by Greenlee and others. Highly recommended. I’ve also had good
luck with less expensive ferrules sold through various silly nonsense-brands on
Amazon.
I recently upgraded to a Rennsteig automatic crimping tool and it’s very smooth
and nicely made. It adjusts automatically up to #6AWG, though one has to fiddle
with the tension lever a little bit to keep from crimping too deeply on smaller
ferrules.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Integrating with Lightning Protection

2021-05-18 Thread Glenn Burt
I would think the existing LPS, if as extensive as you suggest, would need to
have its interconnections removed, and the LPS installer contracted to
re-evaluate and re-install an LPS that also integrates the new array into its
protection scheme.

I am assuming this is a commercial rooftop installation, not a residential,
pitched roof one.

Wrenches,

I see that this topic was discussed back in 2015

and there were some excellent resources shared on how to electrically integrate
PV arrays with existing lightning protection systems (LPS). I am curious if
anyone has any advice about how to physically/mechanically integrate a
commercial rooftop array with an LPS—particularly wondering what to do when we
encounter a network or web of LPS cabling laid out across the roof. I am
assuming we should not simply move the cabling without first consulting with
the LPS contractor... Can a ballasted racking system viably be placed over top
of the cabling? Can ballast bases be placed directly on top of the cabling? or
be made to somehow span over or be elevated above the cabling? Or is this just
a case where we need to limit the PV array to whatever areas of the roof offer
the least interference/convergence with LPS cabling?

Re: [RE-wrenches] OutBack Inverters

2021-05-18 Thread John Blittersdorf
Dave,
An Alternate solution might be to find two good used VFX3524's. All
circuit boards are available from Zonna if they need repair. I have one if
you could find another somewhere.
Contact me off list if interested.

Re: [RE-wrenches] SMA SB 2500U

2021-05-18 Thread Kirk Herander, VSE
These older Sunnyboys do not comply with latest UL standards regardless. If its
a new installation, a savvy utility  / AHJ will catch this.

Some years ago I mis-ordered 5 SB2500s for 208 three phase and it turned
out the system was 240 VAC three phase (open delta). I had to return the
inverters to the factory to be converted and I had to rewire all of the
arrays. So no, I don't think this can be done in the field.

Does anyone know if you can convert a
SMA SB2500U ( old red inverter) from 208 to 240vac?

Without using a boost transformer.

Thx
