Re: [RE-wrenches] Looking for remote controlled contactors

2022-10-11 Thread Jason Szumlanski via RE-wrenches
I'm not a fan of this strategy because it is not failsafe. Contactors fail.
When the coil fails to open the contactor, you will have the PV AC coupled
with the generator If he normally closed contactor is used in this manner.

I think the question needs to be the converse: How do you turn the PV on
remotely only when the generator is not running.

I’ll usually use a 60 amp contactor with 240Vac coil.

The generator powers the coil and opens the Normally Closed contacts
disconnecting the grid tie inverter.

[RE-wrenches] Looking for remote controlled contactors

2022-10-11 Thread Kirk Herander via RE-wrenches
Hi,
I’m looking for suggestions on a remote control 60 amp contactor. It can
either be true wireless or send a signal down an AC power line to open /
close contact at the other end.

I’m trying to figure out a non-wired way to turn an AC coupled inverter off
when the generator is running, as advised by outback and others.

All suggestions welcome thank you.

That was a bit of a cavalier statement on my part. On paper the tech specs
look good.
The warranty (60% after ten years or 3650 cycles) and initial track record
is what I think is mediocre. .
I guess in comparison to Blue Planet most battery warranties look mediocre.

[RE-wrenches] Megger Recommendations

2022-10-11 Thread Sam Haraldson via RE-wrenches
Wrenches,

In order to step up our commissioning and testing game and to take
proactive steps to spot isolation faults and test insulation resistance
prior to our systems getting PTO it is time to invest in a Megger. I am
looking for your recommendations for being able to test both AC (single and
three phase) and DC (600 to 1000 Vdc) conductors in a wide range of sizes
typical to both residential and commercial systems. Ideally the equipment
has the option to test to either bare copper or use MC4 leads.

Am I foolish to look for a single unit that tests both AC and DC or should
I focus on two pieces of equipment? What is your experience with
insulation resistance testing through RSDs, MLPEs, and modules? Are there
brands that specifically state this is a no-go? Are there testers that can
assist in providing a percentage from + or - to help point out the trouble
spot or am I only going to find string-level detail?

Any recommendations

One down side to arranging your own shipping is that you are also usually
shifting the responsibility for any damage upon yourself to deal with in
case you need to make a claim.. Whereas if your distributor ships it they
are responsible for the claim process. Chunks of metal like many racking
systems might be less risky to ship as they are a bit harder to damage than
solar modules or other electronics. You might choose which shipments you
ship or choose to have shipped. But yes, shipping prices have gone wonky
