[RE-wrenches] Testing strings with Tigo

2023-07-05 Thread William Miller via RE-wrenches
Friends:

We are in the midst of our first off-grid, DC coupled project using Tigo
TS4-A-F RSS switches.

In my few years installing solar I am accustomed to testing PV strings with
a Fluke 87 for Voc, Isc, Vmp and Imp, or some combination. I do this
regularly in the midst of installing PV so I can be confident once we are
finished there will be no issues with the panels or the wiring.

I understand these tests are not possible with the Tigo units. With the
circuits unterminated, I can see the 0.6 VDC/Tigo with no keep-alive signal
transmitted. With the signal being transmitted, I do not see the expected
readings for Voc. I get only the 0.6/Tigo. When shorted into the Fluke DC
input the Isc jumps around between 0 and about 2 amps.

I was told by tech support the PV circuits need to be “terminated” at an
inverter before any voltage or current can be measured. The circuits do
not terminate in an inverter; they will connect to a charge controller
(FM100, in this case).

We have not pulled the PV feeders so connecting to the charge controllers
is not yet possible. I am nervous about installing the remainder of the
modules without knowing for certain they will produce as they should.

What would you all do to assure yourselves the PV will produce once
connected?

TIA.

William

Re: [RE-wrenches] evacuated solar tubes

2023-07-05 Thread No Name via RE-wrenches
Good day Wrenches (Joe Nelson here) Dan's correct, a Zinc Oxide layer of lube
on the "bulb" will keep it from sieze-welding to the "socket". . I did mostly
Apricus gear for Evac-tube installs, but any/every manufacturer I've seen uses
some sort of anti-sieze for their heat-pipes. . I could not find Apricus'
product on their website. .Loctite does make a high temp version (LB 8036) that
looks perfectly appropriate, but you'd want your manufacturer blessing if
possible.

Yes, it’s called zinc oxide just like sunblock but it’s pure zinc oxide

G'day All,

I managed to get myself pulled into an evacuated solar hot water system
installed by others. The client is trying to get it reinstated. My question to
the community is do you put any kind of high temperature lube on the probe end
of the evacuated tube that inserts into the water manifold and if so what do
you suggest? I've attached a picture of the tube probe. I believe these are
Sunda tubes.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Snapnrack end caps

2023-07-05 Thread Garrison via RE-wrenches
Hi Drake,

I can confirm. The design could be improved.

I’ve noticed that end caps on rails that are flush or a fraction of an inch
shorter than the panel frame lose the end caps at a higher rate than when the
rail sticks past the module frame. My guess is that module movement from
expansion/contraction is popping them off.

Best,

Can confirm. We receive email from customers on the regular that these are
popping off. I haven't attempted to draw a correlation between when the
systems were installed and the effect of freeze/thaw but that was the
assumption I've made.

[RE-wrenches] Snapnrack end caps

2023-07-05 Thread Drake Chamberlin via RE-wrenches
Hello All,

We have had a lot of end caps fall off Snapnrack Ultra Rail. Kevin at
S was wondering if this is a common occurrence. Is it something we are
doing, is it freezing and thawing or is it the design of the caps.

Thank you,

[RE-wrenches] SolarEdge and Schneider Conext

2023-07-05 Thread Howie Michaelson via RE-wrenches
Hi all,
Had anyone successfully established communications between a SolarEdge
single phase inverter and a Schneider Gateway? I have a client with a
battery backup system which included a dual stack of XW pros and 2 AC
coupled SolarEdge inverters. He would really like to be able to use one
monitoring site to see all the equipment. Right now, the SolarEdge
inverters are invisible on the Insight cloud or local sites, with net
production magically appearing from the house loads. Any ideas or there?
Thanks,
Howie
