Re: [RE-wrenches] Outback Board Repair

2024-02-21 Thread Bradley Bassett via RE-wrenches
Regarding AEE and off grid support, I'm not really in touch with them much
any more so I can't say. You could ask Glenn Hall, he'd be able to say if
he's heard anything about hiring a new tech. Of course finding someone
with much off grid experience would be hard. Glenn and Alex do have some
experience and may be able to help out.

They do maintenance frequently enough to keep an eye on water level.
It worked pretty well, but they still had too much generator time in
the winter when it was hard to get propane up the mountain.  I then
installed their Superwind on a 35" tilt up tower next to their 50'
comm tower.  Since the mountaintop has good winds during the winter,
it has saved them 75% of their generator time and consequently they
have not had to refuel in the winter at all.  We monitor it with
opticsRE and also with some of their transmitter data.  Their load is
about 300 watts 24/7 with it dropping off a little late at night.

It is a repeater site for business band radios, police, emergency etc.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Tigo RSS Off Grid

2024-02-21 Thread Nick A Lucchese via RE-wrenches
Sorry Howie, I now see you were specifically asking about inverter/charge
controller combo solutions. I should have caught that detail. Still seems as an
easy workaround though if for some reason the inverter manufacturer failed to
isolate the 12v output independent of the AC output LBCO. Perhaps just a bit
more of a hassle to find a good spot to mount an OCPD for the converter.
Typically I just use a 1 amp panel mount breaker inside the GSLC but obviously
that would be nonexistent with a Solark or Envy.

It’s already been a couple years since my first and only Solark with RSD and
did utilize the 12v output for the transmitter but don’t recall how they
determine when to terminate the 12v source. Hopefully someone more fond of the
all in one inverters can fill us in!

Re: [RE-wrenches] Outback Board Repair

2024-02-21 Thread Nick A Lucchese via RE-wrenches
Zonna is a dependable resource. I often find they have more repair boards and
parts in their inventory than Outback does themselves. Whether the older legacy
boards or newer VFXR series, Zonna has them. I think of them as the off grid
distributor solution provider that AEE used to be known for.

Bradley B., has AEE made any effort to hire anyone that can attempt to offer
the type of support and knowledge you were known for? Perhaps this is the
reason they are phasing out Outback?

Wallace, am I understanding correctly that they now offer repair services or
refurbished board sets? I’ve only purchased new from them in the past and last
time it seemed Kris Stone was perhaps too overburdened for an expedient repair
solution. Judging by the amount of failures myself or other off grid focused
Outback dealers out there I imagine Kris would be tied up for years! Not trying
to throw any negativity towards Outback as I know many are trying to deal with
growing pains and providing sufficient support but it can certainly be painful
at times. Really looking forward to going all in on Midnite’s newest offerings
once they get the comms box out. Really loving the Barcelona and Rosie so far.

Greetings William,

I think the trick is to have the customer wait until they get the invite and
not have them create an account ahead of time. However on your end, it does say
something about the client being able to add the system if they already have an
account. I too have come across this exact headache you’re referring to and
seems like it always resolves itself by way of the invitation email the
installer initiates.

Hope that helps. I know luck shouldn't need be associated but, good luck! Nick

Should I build it myself?

[RE-wrenches] Adding customer to Optics RE system

2024-02-21 Thread William Miller via RE-wrenches
Friends:

This is a subject that has frustrated me for a long time. I have asked
Outback Tech support but none of their people do this because they are not
customers.

I will connect anew system to Optics and send the client an invitation.
The customer creates and account and then is directed to a page that shows
this:

There is only one link to click and it takes you to this:

Again, you have only one choice. The next step prompts to enter a MAC
address but that MAC address is already in the system and the system will
not let the customer proceed.

I have dealt with this for years. Some customers stumble onto the solution
but if I look over someone’s shoulder I do not see how to log into an
existing system. Anyone know what I am missing?

Thanks in advance.

William

2024-02-21 Thread Matt Sherald via RE-wrenches
Hi All,

I'm looking to move along some damaged Outback (GVFX and VFX) boards.

I found an older thread referencing Kris Stone, but didn't have luck with
the email.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: [RE-wrenches] Tigo RSS Off Grid

2024-02-21 Thread Nick A Lucchese via RE-wrenches
The 48v to 12v DC converter approach should be immune from the inverters LBCO
since it lives on the battery side of the inverter/bus. I’ve done a few systems
using Tigo’s without issue. The main concern is you now have a DC load attached
to the battery output lacking DC load protection that could potentially consume
the little bit of battery capacity you had reserved below the programmed
inverter LBCO. This possibly could require a black start effort by a homeowner
or technician if there were severe clouds for an extended period. It’s not been
a problem for me yet, I typically leave my LBCO for most of my Blue Ion sites
at 48.4vdc.

I wasn’t aware of the Mean-well converters and had been forced to source them
from Bezos unfortunately.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Tigo RSS Off Grid

2024-02-21 Thread Howie Michaelson via RE-wrenches
With the Sol-Ark (or other DC coupled inverter/charge controller
combinations such as the Envy), will the system pass through solar power if
the inverter has turned off on LBCO? If not, then these alternative methods
for powering the RSD signal generators won't make a difference, correct?
And does anyone know about the built in signal generator in the Envy (or
others?) continue to work if the inverter has shut down on LBCO? If not,
wouldn't using the built in signal generators cause a significant headache
in those circumstances?
