Re: [RE-wrenches] REC modules - review?

2024-05-17 Thread Daryl DeJoy via RE-wrenches
I have to chime in with my experiences with REC as well. One of the reasons
we continue to sell their modules is their high marine salt spray rating.
Short term, installing any module in the Caribbean or the coast of Maine
can be successful, but the longevity of highly rated modules like the ones
REC manufactures guarantees success for the long run.
We installed a 32 module REC array on Cat Island in the Bahamas about 18
years ago. The system performed as expected but REC found there was a
defect in the sealing of the junction boxes and put out a recall on them.
After discussions about the reality of removing and shipping back 32
modules to California from Cat Island they suggested we work with them to
do the recall work in the field. Here my memory might be a bit weak, but I
remember two techs coming down to do the work as we removed modules. It was
a day or twos work but the work was completed successfully. If my memory
serves me correctly Tom Donkin was one of the techs and the other tech was
George McClellan. Correct me if I'm wrong, George, it seems like a lifetime
ago.
REC also stepped up another time in my career in 2010 while I was doing
relief work in Haiti after the earthquake. The town of Leogane, where we
were working, had it's entire infrastructure(water/electric/sewer)
destroyed. I asked different manufacturers I had been buying from for years
if they would donate equipment so I could put together a system to provide
water to relief workers and townspeople. REC stepped up in a big way to
help, donating a pallet of modules. They made a difference and I am happy
to say except for that one recall years ago we have never had a single
warranty claim with them.
Just one man's experience.

We have installing REC for 15 years with no issues. George and his team
have been nothing but awesome to work with. We have never had to file a
warranty claims.

As a certified installer the improved warranty and labor credit if there is
a claim has been a great selling point for us as well.

Their app for registering panels is easy.

Our experience with REC is similar to previous respondents. We almost
solely installed REC modules for the better part of a few years and have
over 12,000 (4.31 mW) of them in the field. Ironically enough our first
warranty claim for one was a couple weeks ago (failed diode). The
information submission process involved multiple email exchanges (partially
due to lack of proper information provided by our technician but also
partially due to REC requesting further information they didn't initially
ask for). That was a minor stumbling block and the issue was resolved
quickly. They didn't mail a new module but instead provided us a credit so
we can pick up a replacement at the local Greetech distribution facility
which is pretty handy. Not sure yet about labor reimbursement.

Re: [RE-wrenches] REC modules - review?

2024-05-17 Thread George McClellan via RE-wrenches
Good Morning – Happy to chime in here.

Failure rate - Currently running at 60 PPM, or about 1 module per 16,000
installed. This failure rate includes ALL products in ALL environments since
2010, not a select model in a specific location for a limited period of time.
How the company acts when an RMA is necessary – The REC Claims department
service level agreement is to close out all claims within 14 days from the date
of the claim being filed. They hit this number over 90% of the time. Any
delays are typically due to delays in information gathering on complex claims.
When a claim is filed, an autogenerated note is immediately sent out to the
person filing the claim and within 24 hours a member of the claims team
contacts the person filing the claim (so now the claimant has a direct line of
communications to the claims department). If a claim is accepted, REC will
provide a credit note to the distributor/installer for a replacement module, or
they will send out a replacement module if needed, as well as providing removal
and replacement compensation to the installer if they are a REC Certified Solar
Professional.

Let me know if you have any questions or comments.

David,

We’ve been installing REC since 2009 and have always had a great experience.
Never had to put in for a warranty claim. If you install per REC’s Installation
Manual you’ll unlikely have to file a claim.

[RE-wrenches] PV shedding Enphase

2024-05-17 Thread Mac Lewis via RE-wrenches
Good Morning Wrenches,

I am working through a design with existing PV and a proposed small battery
bank backup. We are pairing existing IQ7As with the System Controller 3,
and a single 5P battery. We are well above the 150% oversizing of PV to
battery capacity that Enphase allows so I need to open some of my branch
circuits when off-grid.

Is there a good reason not to use the grid side of the system (NO relays)
to detect and open 2 of my branch circuits as opposed to using the aux
relay contacts in the IQ System controller to open when off-grid? Is there
ever a time when the System controller would bring the excess PV online?
It seems cheaper and better to use the grid voltage to perform this logic
to me but I may be missing something.

Thanks for your input
