Re: [RE-wrenches] ground-mounted systems, performance

2014-08-10 Thread Alex Cozine
The only problem I've seen was due to a sloped hillside and a riding
lawnmower projectile. These modules are what refer to as the Cadillac of
modules. If you have a chance to use them, you should.

 Hi Jesse,

I'm curious about what you are seeing. We've seen better performance than
that on arrays with those modules, but don't have module-level monitoring
available on any of our systems. Does it look like there is a bipass diode
failure with the shattered modules (probably covered under warranty), or
was there something like lightning near your ground-mounted system? We have
a customer whose home received a direct lightning strike recently (no fire
or human injury!), and 100% of the PV system needs to be replaced (except
 flashing/racking), unfortunately.

I thought the delamination issues were only (or mostly) generation 2
modules and only in our state, but wonder if any installers in other places
 (WA?) are seeing this too?

William Miller has some nice ideas on his website regarding protecting
circuits. I've used his ideas on one project and the inspector liked it.

Silicon Energy makes a module with raceways for output circuits. Their
module is expensive comparatively speaking and I've never seen one of their
190W modules produce over 155W (using Tigos to monitor) they've also had
some delimitation problems with modules made here in MN and one of my
Silicon Energy systems has two modules with the glass shattered on it that
 I discovered today.

[RE-wrenches] Church Solar

2013-09-12 Thread Alex Cozine
I ask, WWWD,

what would wrenches do for church/school installations in respect to
federal/production incentives specifically at churches and schools?

One person champions the federal tax incentive?
A corporation/congregation owns the proposed system?
Each member of congregation owns a module?

Is there any way to have tax/production incentives at a church?

If you are using micro inverters and terminating them in an AC combiner

bushings for the ground wire? In other words is this ground wire a
GEC/Equipment ground like might be used if running an inverter output to a

[RE-wrenches] Contract Examples

2012-10-24 Thread Alex Cozine
Although, not a specifically a wrenching question, writing solid paperwork
directly leads to turning the wrench.

I am looking to update my contract small print. I'm updating a contract
that has worked for 35 years, but it is highly reliant on a firm hand
shake, so to speak.

In summary, it contains; price, terms of payment, expressed warranty and
workmanship manner, not responsible for out of control delays, bid good for
30 days, extras billed on top of this contract, acceptor pays attorneys if
it has to go to court for any reason, service percentage for over due
balance.

Any suggestions or must-haves?
Anyone writing in consulting charges for design rights, clause for if you
designed something unique for a customer someone else uses your design?

Re: [RE-wrenches] Two NEC questions

2012-10-13 Thread Alex Cozine
Rebecca,

First off, nice install on the four SiE pole mounts!

Second, as long as we are talking strictly grid-tied systems, not AC
coupled or battery backup, it seems like Solar should be viewed more like
an appliance. It supplements the service at your house. That being said,
you've got a tough battle ahead. Hopefully someone else on the list has a
great way of calming this inspector down with some good old code lullibies.

Good luck! Sometimes it feels like the Solar 'cops', I mean inspectors,
are trying to justify their jobs.

least several companies are working on devices. How will I know (before the
AHJ knows :-) that residential-scale products are available for purchase,
and at what point would you say now should be required over every other
 option?

Second question: I have an inspector insisting that the solar PV system is
the same as a utility service, and is requiring all of the required service
code references to apply. Anybody have a concise reference that might
convince him otherwise? This same inspector has decided that the electrical
permit will have adders for each inverter as service equipment, and each
module as an electrical device. It would sure be nice if there was more
consistency...we're still in the early adopter phase here in Minnesota.

Thanks in advance for your input.

I agree with bclark. You have to snap lines and measure corner to corner
to get yourself as close as possible to perfect square so you give yourself
the best chance in getting the modules to slide up easily. Advice:
measure between trays or slide channel before bringing each module to
the roof. Ditto bclark to start with first column and work to next column.
East/West third party rails are often the solution to give a little play
 in the installation.

That being said you must have your rubber mallet available for these
 installations.

Good Luck, Silicon Energy is a great, robust product and worth any

think so. COntact them about it. Maybe they have offsite online training.
or they would work with you if you show them your previous work. They
don't sell to distributors so they have to weed out who can buy and install
their modules. I'm almost sure they would work with you. Call them up.

 Hi Marco;

Regular modules are designed to take quite an impact. I recall one
manufacturer that fired 1 ice balls with an air cannon at their modules,
and then let visitors throw baseballs at them. It seems the foul balls would
be at a lower velocity than a person could throw, but I don't know.
Also the Unisolar 64 module has a glass face, so I just don't know of a
 framed module without glass.
Possibly you could add a sheet of Lexan (polycarbonate, very tough and
transparent) over the top of the array. I would think the losses would be
 less than 10%.
 http://www.modernplastics.com/lexan.html
Home Depot sells a corrugated polycarbonate clear roofing panel that could
possibly be attached over the top of the module.

 http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-100049922/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1storeId=10051catalogId=10053
I've run over it, stomped it, dropped tools on it, it pops right out, no
 cracking.

Silicon Energy in Washington makes a bomb proof module that is spendy, but
would hold up at $4.75/watt (comes with mounting frame). There is no frame
on the lower and upper edge which helps snow slide off and they are
laminated with thick Sentry glass by Dupont which is typically used for
hurrican and bullet proof glass. We tested one with 3600 lbs of sand bags
on it and 6 guys jumping up and down on it before we finally broke it. They
have an interesting frame that contains the wiring and is accessible from
the front. I also agree that a steeper angle and somewhere for the snow to
 pile up is essential.

 Hello Dave,

It was good to see you after I was gone to Africa four years ago.

The big system for our of the grid solar set up was never shipped to
 Africa.

 I have the following brand new Items;

 1) Dakar Kombi sine wave Inverter/Charger combination made by
Mastervolt, now known as Victron Energy in the Netherlands (UE).

 Power rating; 3000W - 6000W / 24 VDC

Charge current; 100A 3-stage with automatic transfer switch.

I got this at a good price from an ac/dc company that installed 45 of
those units for the West coast Coast Guard. Also two units for Safe Boats
in Port Orchard to be shipped to Chili.

 2) Alternator from Detroit Diesel Engine Co.

Rated; 220 Amps and 28 VDC

 3) 125 - 200 - 300 - 400 Amp fuses and shunts.

 4) Max charge 24-v multistage regulator

 5) 3/0 AGW wire with numerous lugs

I am prepared to let this all go for $ 1500.00 which is 1/4 of mrsp.

 Greetings and till soon,

 Jan Felix

Do we have the AC IN at both the bottom left and top right? To me it seems

protected loads panel would be fed from the bottom left.

I've never used this method, but would like to use it instead of the two
