2024-05-09 Thread Kristopher Schmid via RE-wrenches
Looking to replace a damaged module. Anyone happen to have a Trina 195
black frame on the shelf circa 2017ish?

Please reply off the list.

Thanks,
Kris

Re: [RE-wrenches] Ballasted ground mounts

2024-03-21 Thread Kristopher Schmid via RE-wrenches
Thanks for the info everyone. I was examining this option in the hopes
that my local AHJ might consider it a non-permanent structure and,
therefore, exempt from wetland setback rules. It turns out that they will
not give me an exemption even with no foundation. Alas, I guess we move
back 40 feet and dust off the chainsaw...

[RE-wrenches] SOK Batteries

2023-10-11 Thread Kristopher Schmid via RE-wrenches
Hello brain trust,

Anyone have experience with SOK lithiums? Here's my issue. Client has a
tiny home and bought their system online (I know, run away...). Whenever
they start a larger load (power tool, hair dryer) it pulls too much current
and causes the BMS to shut down the battery output. Not necessarily a huge
issue, but I cannot get the app (ABC-BMS) to reset the batteries. I log in
with the password and it gives me the reset option, but it will not allow
me to click OK. Hooking up an external battery charger has been my only
successful reset solution.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kris

I won't disclose my markup, but I can tell you that I stopped showing
itemized prices on my bids years ago for exactly this reason. The customer
only sees the final bid amount. If they want to shop around and buy it on
their own, they will have to self install or find another installer. Just
my $.02

[RE-wrenches] Fire fighters

2023-03-08 Thread Kristopher Schmid via RE-wrenches
Hi wrenches,

In speaking to local firefighters last year, I had a question that stumped
me. At night, will the light from the flames or the fire fighters' flood
lights energize the array to a dangerous potential?

Any light you can shed (pun intended) would be most welcome.

[RE-wrenches] Inverter bypass

2023-03-02 Thread Kristopher Schmid via RE-wrenches
Hi All,

I have a stand alone system that was upgraded from an FX inverter to a
Radian WITHOUT the companion load center. I would like to add an inverter
bypass circuit to operate the house on generator power. There used to be a
4 slot breaker panel (SqD?) with the rocker switch preventing both breakers
from being in the on position simultaneously. I have not been able to find
it on the interweb. Anyone know of something out there that would meet my
needs?

[RE-wrenches] Low voltage lithiums

2022-11-19 Thread Kristopher Schmid via RE-wrenches
Greetings all,

I have seen an issue on two different systems that I am hoping someone can
shed some light on for me. One was a 48 volt pack of 12 volt Battle Bornes
and the other was a 24 volt pack of SOKs. What happens is when reaching
the end of the bulk charging stage, the battery voltage spikes and sends
the inverter into an overvoltage error. Can anyone explain what is
happening and a solution?

Thanks,
Kris

[RE-wrenches] Head scratcher

2022-10-18 Thread Kristopher Schmid via RE-wrenches
Hi All,

I am hoping that someone on the list can help me think this one through.

I have a client that builds tiny portable homes. He is working on one
where his client supplied the solar modules, charge controller, batteries,
inverter, etc. They bought them through some dot com. The tiny home has a
240 volt mini split that they want to use when plugged into the grid. The
inverter that they bought is a 120 volt. The inverter is not grid tied,
but does have a 120 volt grid input for battery charging / pass thru.

So, my issue is, how can I make this work? I am thinking of using a 50 amp
automatic transfer switch like a Surge-Guard-40100 and connecting the solar
inverter as primary and grid as backup but am not sure if that unit will
disconnect the grid with only one leg energized. Physical space for
components is very limited

If anyone has some ideas here, I would sure appreciate it.
(other than "just walk away" or buy a 240 volt inverter)

Thanks,
Kris

[RE-wrenches] Qualifying equipment

2022-08-21 Thread Kristopher Schmid via RE-wrenches
Has anyone ever heard this from a tax advisor?

Am I missing something?

What our account said is, if we were audited, the dept. federal revenue
would ask for a certificate from the manufacturer of the solar equipment
showing that they qualify for the credit. He said not all manufacturers
qualify. If you are certain that it qualifies, you could get the
certificate from them for us.

[RE-wrenches] Hail

2022-05-10 Thread Kristopher Schmid via RE-wrenches
We had a pretty serious weather event and one of my clients had hail broken
glass. I advised him to request a replacement of the whole array or, if
not, a module by module inspection for I-V curves and hot spots. I am
wondering if should reach out to other clients. I don't want to be a storm
chaser, but am concerned about micro-fractures.

Re: [RE-wrenches] MLSD module level shutdown

2021-01-29 Thread Kristopher Schmid
Sky,

I, for one, totally agree. While I agree with the need to keep
firefighters safe, it seems to me that rules regarding solar conduit would
serve the same purpose; required labeling of rooftop conduit beyond the
array boundary, required distance below roof deck for attic conduit, etc.
I am sure that there is a fair amount of lobbying by SolarEdge and Enphase
to keep the rapid shutdown rules unchanged and retain their market share.
While MLPE have their place in the industry, they should not be the only
viable choice for a roof mounted array.

Thanks for all the discussion and insight. I believe the main issue here
is them being territorial about the meter socket (they did not install it
and they do not own it). My follow up question to them was, "I assume that
you allow a 320 A meter socket feeding two main panels. Is this
different?" Waiting for a response...

2020-10-27 Thread Kristopher Schmid
Hi All,

I have a utility that is hinting that they are going to deny my
interconnection application with a supply side connection and require a
load side. Has anyone seen this before?

(Proposed interconnection would be with Milbank step lugs in a 200 A socket
and a 60 A fused disconnect within 10 feet.)

If they refuse it, i am thinking that registering a complaint with the

Re: [RE-wrenches] GTBB inverters without batteries

2020-10-11 Thread Kristopher Schmid
Like Kirk, I have installed a few StorEdge inverters successfully without
batteries. You do have to change a few of the default programming
settings, but they seem to work fine without the LG Chem pack.

If you are going to replace the meter socket, using a 200 amp Milbank and a
set of Milbank Step Lugs
https://www.milbankworks.com/products/catalog/K4977-INT
makes a nice clean solution.

 Greetings Wrenches,

I have an unusual request. I have a top of pole rack that was designed
incorrectly for the intended modules and i am looking for a dimensional

bill, please contact me off list. (Racking is designed for Jinko
JKM320M-60)

Required dimensions:
Overall: 992mm x 1650mm
Mounting holes: 942mm x 860mm

Thanks,
Kris

Re: [RE-wrenches] Convex modules

2019-11-18 Thread Kristopher Schmid
If they were deformed with a tightened strap, it seems to me that every
other module would be bowed in the opposite direction...this is not the
case. Every frame is bowed up to the glass side including the one on the
end that was installed glass side in for protection. I will check the
glass itself and the centerline of the module. Modules were palleted and
shipped vertically as shown in the picture.

The banding is a good thought, Glenn, except that the one module that was
oriented the opposite way was deformed in the opposite direction. This
rules out the forklift idea, too. I will check specs. I doubt that

I have run into this many times and have never found a definitive answer.
The disconnect spec typically says that it must be protected with an ocpd
at or less than the disco rating, but we are dealing with a current limited
device (inverter) in this case so it would seem legal to me.

[RE-wrenches] Outback question

Has anyone ever done a dual radian installation with only one GSLC? I
can't see the need for a second one other than wire routing. Am i missing
something?

[RE-wrenches] Canadian Solar CS6P-260P

2018-09-13 Thread Kristopher Schmid
Greetings,

I am looking to replace a damaged Canadian Solar CS6P-260P. Does anyone
happen to have one lying around? This is on a ground mount with top down
attachment and i would prefer to not have to slide the whole row to make
room for a larger dimension module. Width is 39.1" (992mm).

[RE-wrenches] 72 volt charge controller

2018-09-12 Thread Kristopher Schmid
Hi all,

I am servicing a system that has a 72 volt charge controller circuit board
made by solar converters in Canada. I believe they are no longer in the
business. The float and bulk settings are messed up and they are set with
two variable resistor pots. Can anyone tell me how I can set these???

[RE-wrenches] Pika

2018-09-07 Thread Kristopher Schmid
Wrenches,

I am trying to design a Pika off-grid system. The issue is that they
currently have no way to charge from a generator. Has anyone ever
installed one set up for zero grid export and connected the generator to
the grid input?

Would LG chem or another manufacturer be a better choice?

[RE-wrenches] Fire damage

2018-05-04 Thread Kristopher Schmid
Greetings wrenches,

I have a client that is looking to buy some salvaged modules off of a
building that was near a fire. What kind of potential issues can you
anticipate? Smoke, heat, etc. Would it be enough to just test voc and isc
for a known cell temp and irradiance in addition to a visual inspection or
would an iv curve trace be necessary?

Thanks for any information,

Re: [RE-wrenches] Issue with DR1512 and oven

2016-09-20 Thread Kristopher Schmid
Thanks all.

I have a Peerless Premier LP stove in my own house, but i am grid tied so i
was not sure how they behave with dirtier waves. Good to know that they
are so bulletproof. I am guessing that the appliance shop will not be
happy with going outside of their usual brands, but that seems to be the
direction you are all suggesting. I will make my strong recommendation and
see how it flies.

Thanks,
Kris

[RE-wrenches] Issue with DR1512 and oven

2016-09-19 Thread Kristopher Schmid
Hi Wrenches,

I have a client that has blown out 2 control boards on their oven in the
last few months. The appliance is a Whirlpool Model WFG515S0EW0 powered by
a Xantrex DR1512. Since this is an off-grid home, i recommended that they
get an LP stove with no oven glow bar and this was the unit that the
appliance company supplied.

Has anyone seen this before (i am assuming incompatibility of the circuitry
with the modified sine wave output)?

Can you recommend another model that has been tried and true (preferably
Whirlpool)?

Thanks tons,
Kris

[RE-wrenches] Looking for a SolarWorld module

2016-04-25 Thread Kristopher Schmid
Hi Wrenches,

I was short one SW 275 Protect module on an install and substituted a SW
275 mono expecting that i could swap it out, but SolarWorld has not been
running those for a long time, so...

Does anyone have a SW 275 Protect module (or larger wattage) on the shelf?

Thanks,
Kris

Could the old batteries cause the CC to pull too much PV current? Even at
1.25 times the Isc of my strings, i should only be pulling 41.75A maximum.

Hi All,

I recall a thread not so long ago where someone was having an issue with a

Kris,

I have the greenlee model 501 locator at roughly $500 and it works fine :
http://www.greenlee.com/products/CABLE-LOCATOR-TACKER-II-(501).html

I also bought the greenlee pulse fault locator at roughly $1,100 and I have
been very happy with the combination. The fault locator is especially
awesome, my employees as first time users can find faults in quarter mile
long buried lines over 4ft deep with no trouble within a few inches
worth every bit of the investment!

Good luck,

Re: [RE-wrenches] Wire locator

2016-03-19 Thread Kristopher Schmid
A reply from Theo Van regarding wire locators.

-- Forwarded message --
From: Theo Van <theom...@yahoo.com>

Subject: Re: Wire locator
To: Kristopher Schmid <sol...@legacysolar.com>

I have a Greenlee 508 S, my second one. Transmitter sends a signal tone on
conductor and receiver whines when near target and nulls out when dead on.
Very accurate once you're used to it.

On plus side:
About $300.00
Compact, fits in truck nicely in a good case.
Locates 3' deep and more and at least 2000' in my use.
Will trace anything conductive.
Conductors can be energized (to 120VAC I think?) or not.

Cons are:
User learning curve but prob same w most units.
Wimpy alligator clips but carry a bigger one and clip to that.
Not so good in walls.
No provisions for fault locating other than tone fades or stops.
Can pick up interference from AC and DC sources.

Call USA and use them as a guide if possible.
And ALWAYS make sure the buried wire you think is de energized REALLY is. A
local wire jocky just died here cause he cut buried wire he was sure he de
energized.
More than once I've come across underground hack work (and not) that was
hard to make sense of because I couldn't see where the wires really came
from or went. My locator didn't lie; it just didn't tell the whole story.
On a related note, something new to think about considering long distance
underground high voltage DC runs now becoming more common; how can you test
if it's live? How would anyone even know it's there?
One day someone is going to drive a steel fence picket through a DC feeder
that nobody remembered was there
Be safe. Good luck.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Battery Box Construction

2016-01-29 Thread Kristopher Schmid
Ray,

I have had good success with flat rubber membrane roofing. I have not had
good success with caulked seams, so i run a continuous peice and lap the
corners. A stapler won't hold the laps so i will drive a wood screw into
the box corner to hold it tight. It has never gotten gooey on me even with
clients that think their batteries need to be full to the tippy top :-}

 Dan,

What do you mean by tilt up racking. Would an example be a rack that
adds 15 degrees to a 5/12 roof? Good idea (as long as wind load is taken
care of) for cold snow country (certainly for off grid) to get the tilt
angle higher which helps with snow shedding. BUT if it's super cold like
this winter here in northern New England nothing helps as much as a snow
 rake.

On a side note. I had a couple of monitored grid tied systems with second
story roof top arrays that produced very little power from January through
second week of March. 80% less kWh than similar first story roof top arrays
where the homeowner raked off snow. It was so cold that in one period this
winter that it did not get over 30 degrees F for 48 consecutive days here,
with many nights at 15 to 30 below zero. February was the coldest on record
(since 1886) with temps that were 15 degrees below average for the month.
No snow shedding going on at all.

On another type of array. My adjustable ground mount here set at 90
degrees had a great winter as I regularly saw 1,750 to 1,950W out of my
Apollo CC from a 1,440W array on sunny days because of MPPT and the
reflective bounce of sunlight off the snow in front of the array. I never
have to touch those modules from mid November, when I tilt them to 90
degrees, until after it stops snowing significantly (mid April usually).

 Dave

Ignoring the effect of roofing material friction and tilt angle, i would
surmise that the array being open-backed would reduce heat build up and
actually decrease the snow shedding ability.

BTW Dan. I have designed and installed power sheds here in the north with

18 or so distance from roof to bottom of modules to allow the snow on the
surface of the roof to be cleaned occasionally with a roof rake. Adjustable
legs will allow experience to be your guide going forward on how much of a
tilt is needed (and tolerated appearance wise). Of course the wind loads
are severe with a design like this and must be managed.

I have been told by a client who was told by his tax advisor that the 30%
tax credit does not apply to self employment tax. Can anyone confirm or
 deny this assertion?

I am interested in the answer to your question, Kirk. If you find it
somewhere other than on this thread, can you please let me know. I have
heard 5 years, but not from a CPA.

Thanks,

What is the length of carryover for the Federal tax credit (individual)?
It’s clear in the tax code a business has a one year carry back 20 year
carry forward. For the residential, it seems to indicate only a 1 year
carry forward, but not explicitly stated. Thoughts? Thanks.

Re: [RE-wrenches] NABCEP consultant fee

2015-02-10 Thread Kristopher Schmid
Chris,

I have done this in the past. WI incentives used to require NABCEP cert.
Looking back, i probably undercharged. Given that you are putting your
reputation and certification on the line and therefor will need to be
involved in design, planning, and inspection, i think that a percentage of
the installed cost would be a good way to approach it. I see this service
as very similar to a construction manager who typically receives 5-7% of
project cost.

still allowed for larger than #6. I have also heard that some modules will
soon come with one black and one white lead.

  Hi Dick;

What you're suggesting is actually something I thought would work too:
having totally odd colors that immediately said DC.
IT really would be the best, because if you go in with a meter set to
read AC, and show no voltage, then get your voltage sniffer out, and it
doesn't beep, you think you're double safe, when actually you could get hit
 with 500 v dc.

I try and mark every J-box that has DC conductors in it with the DC
voltage. The life I save probably will be my own, as I'm getting more
 forgetful with age..

  I think one of the problems is that this is actually not a NEW issue;
we are reviving the 100+ year old AC vs DC battle that Edison
Westinghouse, and Tesla, et al. fought before. Factories have AC and DC on
site, and it just amazes me that marking polarity isn't required by code.
We have to mark the bonded conductor, or the high leg in certain 3 phase
systems, so identifying DC polarity seems just as important.
I actually really like your purple with a white stripe idea. At one
time I tried to color code for DC voltage too, (Red for 12 v, purple for
24, Orange for 48 v) and even used yellow tape for my PV inputs as they had
a higher V than the battery. Now I just try to label everything copiously,
and have polarity align with my meter.
My biggest problem is still old 12 v house wiring on Romex (white and
black) or which side of those Monkey face outlets should be + or - ..
These days, I just try to switch the circuit over to AC (go Tesla!)

Re: [RE-wrenches] 120% rule applying to conductors

2012-09-28 Thread Kristopher Schmid
It seems to me that the conductor should not be subject to the 120% rule
despite what the code says. The potential safety issue here is overloading
the neutral bus, right? While feeding currents could be additive in the
panel, they would be subtractive on the feeder, no? I seem to remember
seeing this discussion on the list before.

utility in the feeder. The wire will never supply over the 100 A. The
theoretical max the inverter could backfeed would be 40 Amps in the 100 Amp
cable if no loads were being supplied. It would certainly not be a safety

This is an amazingly timely post for me! I was just thinking of asking the

concrete pillars/galvanized anchor bolts/aluminum channel base. I notice
that DPW for example specs galvanized pipes to be attached with u-bolts to
their aluminum racking in their LGM racks.

Anxiously awaiting the collective wisdom...

We have recently received several “flags” during the engineering review
process of our design documents on state funded projects stating all bolted
connections between aluminum and galvanized steel will require neoprene

Any of you run into this requirement or have had any problems? The only
issues we ever see with corrosion is mixing copper and aluminum such as

 Kris,
 I don't know a Code-compliant solution, having not faced this. But I'll
suggest that you not attempt to glue and seal conduit to keep the conductors
dry, as it won't work permanently. Use wet-rated wire, expecting any conduit
to provide only physical protection. THWN is wet-rated - that's the W. You
might consider submersible pump cable also.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Dangerous installs/installers..

2011-05-07 Thread Kristopher Schmid
We will be seeing a lot more of this with the big box stores selling solar.
I have already set my rate at 150/hour with a blanket liability form in
anticipation of this kind of work. We can only hope that nobody kills
themselves in the process 'cause you know that it will be the solar energy
and not the deceased homeowner that's blamed in the media.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Slow clocks

2011-04-05 Thread Kristopher Schmid
Thank you all for confirming my suspicion regarding generators and clocks
and for the advice. While i wholeheartedly agree that a 24/7 load like a
clock in an off-grid home seems rather foolish, everyone's line between NEED
and WANT falls in a different place. I see it as my job to educate and not
to judge, as hard as that is sometimes. Though i don't share their views, I
still put in systems for those folks believing in TEOTWAWKI (the end of
the world as we know it).

Thanks again,

The way I learned to set gen set rpm's about 25 years ago was with a plug in

Here in American Samoa the electronic clocks always run fast, a few minutes
gained every other day due to high frequency issues (65+Hz) that plague the
Island. The local power authority keeps the diesel generators cranked.

Hope this help a little.

Re: [RE-wrenches] sizing a sub-panel used to combinemultiple inverter outputs

2011-03-30 Thread Kristopher Schmid
By this argument, wouldn't it be necessary to check every conductor in the
backfeed path adding potential PV amps to their required ampacity including
the utility conductor from the transformer?

Here is a 690.64(B)(2) opinion from Wiles that may help.

http://www.fafcosolar.com/download/409/690%2064%28B%29%282%29TECH-1.pdf

It's still my contention that the conductors need to be sized for 150A in
this example, unless an exception is made by the AHJ. If David Brearley's
post about Wiles' clarification is accurate, them the 80A main breaker in
the subpanel can be used for calculations, but the conductor still needs to
be sized for 80A + 80A =160A / 1.2 = 133.3A.

Al,

How about a 15-amp single-pole breaker for power line carrier communications
equipment to talk to the inverters?
Technically, I think either way they are loads and that changes everything.
But in my opinion they are minor and should be allowed without considering
the sum of all sources.

The type of monitoring device I am talking about has CT's that go around the
conductors and the Voltage ref is taken by attaching conductors to each
phase, the Neutral and the ground bar.The digital Meter has a 3-pole 5A
breaker in it so the conductors in the load center can be connected to lugs
on the bus bar directly.

Another key is to remember that this discussion also applies to the
conductor between the main panel and subpanel. In a large PV system, this
could result in a pretty large wire between the two panels, and a
significant cost that is often overlooked. In some cases it makes sense to
locate the subpanel close to the main panel and run multiple sets of smaller
wires from the inverters to the subpanel.

And because the calculation is based on the first OC protection connected to
the inverters, adding a main breaker (theoretically 80A in this example) in
the subpanel doesn't change things. Even though this wire would be
theoretically protected by an 80A breaker at each end, you can't size the
wire for 160A / 1.2 = 133.3A. You have to size for 180A/1.2 = 150A. (not
that it makes much of a difference in this example, but it still must be
considered)

At least that's how I understand it.

Opps!

My bad, I was thinking of a single phase system, not the three phase system
shown in the article.

For the three phase system Kent is correct in counting 180A of supply per
bar.

I think Kent and I agree. For the case where the subpanel is not dedicated a
PV sub-panel he is calculating for 2 - 50A breakers and I calculated for 3 -
50A breakers.
