Check out Brooklyn Solar . They have a

Same situation here. Supply completely dried up and we got the same, tired

finally started getting some shipments but nothing close to the promises we

[RE-wrenches] Is Solark UL 9540 Certified?

2021-07-20 Thread Lorenzo Ortiz
Wrenches,

We have recently had an AHJ reject our Solark 12k system with Simpliphi
batteries stating:
*"Energy storage systems are required to be listed per UL 9540 per NEC
706.5 (See also Annex A in the NEC, under energy storage systems). The
Sol-Ark system is not listed and tested per UL 9540 but is only listed per
UL 1741. The complete system (ie. batteries, inverter, and any other
components associated with the energy storage system) must be listed per UL
9540. Please provide documentation and certification sheets (from a
Nationally Recognized Testing Lab (NRTL)) for both the batteries and SolArk
inverter to show that all components are tested and certified per UL 9540.
If it cannot be shown that the batteries are tested and listed with SolArk
inverters per UL 9540, then such system cannot be installed and a different
system that is listed and tested per UL 9540 must be chosen for the
project.*

Have any of you run into this with Solark? Is the plans-checker in the
wrong about the entire system needing to meet the standard and not just the
batteries? The code language is kind of confusing. I can't find any
documentation on Solark's website regarding UL 9540. I know Tesla and
Simpliphi have recently put out documentation regarding this.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Module-Level Shutdown for off grid systems

2019-09-27 Thread Lorenzo Ortiz
Thanks Mac. Yeah, Tigo was my first choice but then a search turned up this
product, the FireRaptor
<https://www.solar-electric.com/outback-power-obfrs-01-fireraptor-rapid-shutdown.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIzdXL_MLx5AIVFBx9Ch01vQSsEAkYASABEgIWpvD_BwE>
.
Funny name and something I haven't heard a lot about but it does allow for
a 2:1 ratio so could help save on costs.
But I'm wary to be a guinea pig for unproven tech.

These new rules, while having good intentions, are seriously impacting off
grid designs where most sites, like you mentioned, are *way* far away from
the nearest fire department. So, kind of pointless in my opinion. But I
don't make the rules...

[RE-wrenches] Module-Level Shutdown for off grid systems

2019-09-27 Thread Lorenzo Ortiz
Wrenches,

Are any of you looking ahead at solutions for module level rapid shutdown
for off grid? Here in CA it's being implemented next year (at least in my
area) and I haven't found any reliable, proven, *cost-effective* products
yet.
I know Tigo has some sort of inline component but haven't heard a lot about
it.

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks

Same. We've started calling our initial $100k+ proposals the 'kiss of
Death' since we tend to never hear from them again. It's a good way to weed
out those who aren't willing to spend the time/capital on a system that
will actually perform what they're asking (reliably!).

Yep, all the rules still apply, But with 480 you get far more leeway as far
as breaker size with the square-root factored in.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Raised up ground mounts

2018-09-20 Thread Lorenzo Ortiz
We've used DPW also with good results. We design for 110 mph winds out
here and, depending on how high you go, can require some pretty beefy SCH80
8"-10"D pipe.
MT Solar might be something to look at too. They make multi-pole mounts for
larger arrays but can get a little pricey.

Good luck!

Re: [RE-wrenches] Step-up/Step-down Transformer question

2018-09-18 Thread Lorenzo Ortiz
Thanks for all the input guys. After looking at the 3 phase with
transformer options with some transformer manufacturers, that has been
pretty much ruled out due to complexity/cost.
With single phase step-up and step-down transformers, even at 600VAC, it
still requires some monster wire.
The best solution seems to be placing the inverters next to the POI and
just running long strings from the array back to the inverters and
accepting up to 4%-5% voltage drop. And that's with #8 instead of the usual
#10 AND accounting for worst-case production.

Man, sometimes this solar stuff is just crazy...

[RE-wrenches] Step-up/Step-down Transformer question

2018-09-17 Thread Lorenzo Ortiz
 Wrenches,

We have a PV array situated about 900' from the POI (240V 1PH). We
initially spec'd (5) 11.4kW inverters and the combined output would be
238A. The wire size required for this current over that distance is cost
prohibitive.

A solution was to use a single 50kW 3 phase inverter at the array and then
convert it to 240V... somehow? Is anyone familiar with how to go about
doing this? My thought was to have a step down transformer at the POI and
pull off two legs to get 240V. Is this even a thing?

The other, more expensive option is to use a step up transformer at the
array and a step down at the POI to get us a smaller wire size.

Thanks for any input.

[RE-wrenches] Pro Harvest Inverters (Formerly HI-Q)

2018-06-20 Thread Lorenzo Ortiz
Wrenches,

Anyone have any experience with the Pro Harvest inverters (now branded by
Outback)?
They were previously known as HI-Q inverters I believe and they come in 3PH
208V & 480V and are super-small and light weight.

Just wondering on their reliability or any known issues since they are
relatively new.

Re: [RE-wrenches] concrete roof tile install

We do flat tile roofs all day out here in CA. We've used these flat tile
roof hooks by Solar Roof Hooks
<https://www.solarroofhook.com/product/17540?parent=17540&id=475> to great
success.
Pull up a tile, find a rafter, pilot holes, goop, put in a hook with lags,
more goop, and then a piece of roof-flashing tape for good measure, put the
tile back and move on to the next one.
No issues with leaks so far.
