Re: [RE-wrenches] GPS units

Hi William,

In past life as an advanced flight instructor in powered parachutes
and I used to carry the Garmin GPS-90. It has an analog altimeter and
electronic compass. It also keeps a graphical log of elevations. You
can turn off the GPS input for these functions and just use the
analog. Great if the GPS satellite system goes down and you don't want
to land in a plowed field because you are lost!

I doubt the resolution is good enough for what you need but it may be
worth a look.

The most fun I ever had was reverse scamming two of these scum-bags. I

wire me $20 cash so I could confirm the contact information, address,

sent me overnight delivery of fake US postal money orders for $4500

that they can to this address, load it all into a shipping

We tried several times to trace these abusiness names or addresses

Peter,

We use ANL type fuses (see here) in mobile applications for circuits
like converters, generator starters and other heavy distribution
circuits up to 300 amp. For large inverters with 2/0 and above cable
we recommend Class T fusing.

The Prosine 1000 should be protected with a 150 amp fuse (see table 4
of the manual). For simple short circuit protection the ANL should
work fine. It has an interrupt rating of about 2700 amperes and up to
80 Vdc. I am not positive about the legality. The way I understand it,
SAE makes standards and NEC makes no rules for 12 volt mobile systems.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Inverter with two strings of different orientation

2008-12-29 Thread Starlight Solar, Yuma, AZ
I have pondered this problem often. Here's my thoughts: If you could
disconnect the two orientations and monitor them simultaneously, in
the morning the easterly array would have a higher Vmp while the
westerly array would necessarily be lower. This relationship would
change throughout the day with an equilibrium being when the sun is
equidistant between the two arrays. (I'm just stating the obvious here)

My question is will the lower Vmp array pull down the voltage of the
higher? I notice this effect with dissimilar solar panels and MPPT
controllers that many DIY RV customers have. It was stated that you
may have a 2-5% loss. I can't imagine that the losses would be that
low averaged for the day.

If the strings were split equally accross the two orientations, wont
the Vmp track throughout the day and give the most production
possible? Of course the inverter threshold voltage will not be met for
as many hours daily but how much will this arrangement loose?

I don’t think this topic has been dealt with in this forum.
Ocassionally we want to use a single inverter with two or more

modules are identical. And each string/sub-array contains the same

The question is: “How different can the orientation be for the

Let me pose a concrete example: Xantrex GT5.0, two strings of BP
Solar SX3190s. One string has an orientation of 15 deg tilt and 188
degrees azimuth; the other has 23 degrees tilt and 139 degrees
azimuth. For reasons that are difficult to explain, none of the
orientation angles can be changed, at least for the purposes of this
discussion. To visualize what I am talking about: the tilts are
fairly close (8 degrees) and the azimuths differ by about 45 degrees.

How do I calculate the combined performance? How much power does one
give up compared to using separate inverters for each sub-array/
string? Are there rules of thumb as to what works and doesn’t? Do
conventional inverters have algorithms that can navigate the non-
ideal I-V characteristic under load? I know there was a tech
bulletin from Fronius a while ago: I read it but didn’t come away
with any definitive answer. I also had first hand knowledge with
MPPT algorithm problems with the Fronius inverters during that time
period, which caused me to discount the tech bulletin.

I am quoting a system as we speak, so my inquiry is not hypothetical

Re: [RE-wrenches] Module Voltage Question for Off-Grid Designers

2008-12-10 Thread Starlight Solar, Yuma, AZ

Allan,

Because many MPPT controllers convert to any battery voltage, new
installations allow you to use just about any solar module. When I
install any higher voltage module on RV's (12 volt battery), I design
series strings up to the max design voltage to minimize voltage drop.
No more 6 gauge wire runs. Now I can install Sanyo's or even Kaneka's
and charge 12 volt batteries with up to 97% conversion efficiency.

If you are trying to add to an existing array it may be harder to
match up your Vmp for parallel strings. I would not be worried about a
few volts. The voltages will average out somewhere in the middle. For
instance, I have customers in Mexico that have very old systems (think
Arco). They want to keep the PV modules they have and add more while
upgrading to MPPT. I have done this by re-stringing the old modules in
series and try to get close to the published Vmp of the new modules.
Some power will be lost in this parallel setup as it is difficult to
estimate the Vmp of a 20 year old module. I have done this for several
customers and so far it has worked well.

Wrenches,
Here's an issue I haven't seen directly addressed, and I would like
to know what the rest of you are doing.
It's getting harder to get 24V nominal modules. Because the bulk of
industry growth is high-voltage grid-tied applications, modules no
longer have to be a standard voltage. Just pick the number of
modules to best fit the chosen inverter's string voltage range.

But for off-grid, the odd cell counts and resulting "nontraditional"
DC input voltages challenge the traditional rules of off-grid
design. I may be fighting a losing battle here, as the industry
changes so rapidly and fundamentally. I have been trying to stay
with 72-cell modules for offgrid, as this most readily combines with
existing systems with 36-cell modules (12V) and 72-cell modules (24V).

For example, I will use the new Canadian Solar 170-200W modules.
They are 60-cell modules, with a Vmppt of around 28 volts - too low
to charge 24V batteries with a standard charge controller. We can
use them in any new systems with an MX60 or similar voltage-
converting MPPT controller. Two or three in series would charge a
24V battery; 3 in series would charge 48V. Four in series would
violate Code, as low-temp voltage would easily exceed 150V.

Unless 60-cell modules remain a standard in the future, any future
array additions would have to be on their own charge controller, in
order to match a different I-V curve and MPP voltages into the same
battery bank. Is this prohibitive? No, it just runs counter to the
longstanding standards of off-grid design that allow modules to be
added in the future: these modules will not add well to existing
systems, and will not easily allow additional dissimilar modules to
be added later.

I had this same objection to using Day4 modules, although they were
better at 16Vnom. Three made up a standard 48V array, so strings
could be combined with two-module strings of similar 24Vnom modules.

Who else is trying to stay with 24V modules? Anyone still using 12V
modules in off-grid (residential-scale, not little apps) designs?
Who has a crystal ball and knows what modules will be like in 20
years, or even two years? Wat are the rest of you doing?

Thanks, as usual.

framed by the tile and allows for simple installation. It looks good
too.

Hi All,
Anyone use the Quick-Mount PV system for tile? We don't do many tile
roofs,
but we have an upcoming job with flat cement tiles. In the past
we've pulled
the tiles, placed posts and flashed, cutting the tile to fit. It's a
pain.
The Quick Mount PV system, www.quickmountpv.com, replaces a tile
with a
exact-fit plastic flashing with integral flange that goes over the
post. It

sounds like it'll save a lot of time - if it works.
Thanks,

Re: [RE-wrenches] Insurance classification

2008-12-04 Thread Starlight Solar, Yuma, AZ

Todd,
I think you are putting yourself at risk. What if you have a claim and
they deny it because you did work on a roof?

My insurance cost is $850 per year for $1M. I'll let the group know
what my agent says about these other classifications when they get
back to me.

[RE-wrenches] Insurance classification

2008-12-03 Thread Starlight Solar, Yuma, AZ
Does anyone know what the insurance classification is for installation
of renewable energy equipment installer? My insurer has me under
95647, heating and AC contractor. I asked about this and was told
there is no class for RE installers.

Does anyone have any RC-6 remote controls? I need 6 of them. I can use
RC-7's if no one has the RC-6.
