Re: [RE-wrenches] Energy Storage Equipped Appliances

2023-09-27 Thread Steve McCarney via RE-wrenches
Hi

Since battery reliance brings it's own set of challenges there have been
some products that have used built in storage that is battery free.

Fridges can be found that use ice in the walls and/or top to store cool.
So no battery needed. Mostly used for DC clinics where vaccines are stored
but Sundanzer may have some that are more domestic oriented.

Another energy storage "appliance" are pumps that can use stored water as a
way around the battery.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Vaccine refrigeration

2018-11-15 Thread Steve McCarney
hi

I agree that SunDanzer battery, free solar direct drive (SDD) fridges have
revoluntionized the solar vaccine fridge market. Two of their fridges are
WHO preqaulaified thrugh extensive testing that approvees a product for
sale through the UN. If you need a freezer too then SunDaner has also
pioneered SDD freezers for immunization ice pack freezing.

If the health facility also needs some power for lights, fan and small
battery recharging (e.g.cell phone, laptop, fetal doppler) then check out
the B Medical Systes Health Center Kit that is approved by WHO to be
coupled to a B Medical SDD vaccine frdge (or SDD fridge freeer
combination). WHO calls that category of products "Energy Harvesting" and
the control system always priorities the vaccine fridge power first and
then harvests the excess for user selected loads, about 500 Wh/day are
presently availalbe and more in the future is the hope. If the energy
harvest control fails it does take down the fridge.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Off Grid Refrigeration

2017-06-27 Thread Steve McCarney
Hi Drake

Probably the biggest development in off grid solar refrigeration is the
growing use of battery free solar direct drive (SDD) fridges and freezers.
These are now in widespread use by the global immunization community for
vaccine refrigeration and some ice pack freezing. It is believed there are
over 10,000 already deployed with many more planned in the next few years.

There are 7 manufacturers around the globe that have earned WHO
"pre-qualification" after passing stringent testing focused on conserving
vaccine. Some also offer SDD for other uses. To see who they are go the
WHO website and see their catalog with approved fridges and freezers at
http://apps.who.int/immunization_standards/vaccine_quality/pqs_catalogue/

Best wishes

Re: [RE-wrenches] Warranty replacements

2014-10-16 Thread Steve McCarney
Warranty-related service calls and related issues are compounded for off
grid sites where travel time is usually longer than the time it takes to do
the service. The burden is unequally shared since some problems are due to
faulty equipment, user/site circumstances and installer responsibility.

We install solar powered vaccine fridges in Africa and the Americas and
have recently wrestled with this globally and are discussing a way to
assign the responsibility so the installer is not unfairly saddled with the
lions share of the costs.

It seems fair that the cost of service should be borne by the responsible
party - if determined to be an equipment failure within warranty period
shouldn't the manufacturer be liable for cost of service? But if the user
(or the site conditions that are out the control of manufacturer and
installer) are the cause then the owner should pay but if the installer
caused it then they should be liable.

These same concerns come up when system acceptance (and final payment) is
tied to some sort of system performance metric that might again be impacted
by equipment, user/site conditions or the installer.

We are trying to point all this out to buyers ahead of time to get their
agreement to be responsible in cases user/site circumstances lead to a
service call/warranty call. However moving the manufacturers toward a more
equitable stake in post install expenses is difficult, especially if you
are not a high volume buyer.

And then there is the question of who determines the cause of a problem
since it will not always be clear.

Frankly, our issue is the UNsteady stream of service issues with both

we have to pull install crews from active installations to handle these
issues, which is neither economical nor good for our installation business.
As much as PV service is an annoyance for system owners, it's a huge
distraction for a small dealer. In fact, one competitor refuses to service
the systems they install. We have been picking up service business as a
result (we have a reputation for doing so and manufacturers call us), but
it's still not steady enough to handle well.

We are starting to see a fairly steady stream of various solar

AC modules (microinverter failing), and even modules with an integrated DC
electronic component failing to work from the get go. I work with
residential customers and care about doing right by them, and of course
they expect that their warrantied part will be replaced at no cost to them,
they have already invested a lot in their solar project. Sometimes the
manufacturer has a stipend which at least offsets the cost of gas but does
not cover time to travel to the site and do the replacement, but I have
recently come across several manufacturers who do not give any stipend at
all and I am surprised at that. Replacing a module in the middle of a
pitched roof is no small feat, and getting to micro inverters on a steep
pitch is always a challenge. As the code requires more safety features down
to the module level, I suspect we will see more and more of this, and the
electronics are no longer at ground level and easily accessible. What ideas
do you have about how to deal with this? Must we have an O and M contract
with every customer given current product choices?

A similar question relates to a particular module having issues
with delamination and failed diodes. We have been called out to several
sites where this has caused the inverter to sense a fault, and testing
showed the module leaking voltage to ground. Who is responsible for getting
the inverter up and running when it clearly stems from the module? I
suspect the module manufacturer's warranty legally exempts them from
responsibility, but again it is reasonable for the customer to expect a
warrantied system to be up and running.

 Thoughts from the field?

 Sincerely,
 Rebecca Lundberg

Re: [RE-wrenches] Fix the Fluorescents: What about LED tubes for late 2012?

2012-12-05 Thread Steve McCarney
Hi

In Tunisia there is a net zero energy retrofit project in 4 health
facilities. The exisitng lights were mostly ceiling mounted 34 W
Flourescent tubes and 20 W tubes. We replaced them with 20 W and 10 W LED
tubes. The LED tubes are more like task lighting that directs the light
onlyt downward, compared to the fl tubes that light evenly around the tube.
So with the light directed downward to the task area it was an acceptable
replacement and cut lighting energy consumption roughly in half. The only
complaint I heard (through the grapevine) was about the one tube that was
wall mounted - they said it bothered the eyes because it was at eye level
and they said it was too bright (the 20 watt LED tube). I have not heard of
any LED tube failures on this project (in 1.5 years).

The same fixture that holds fl tubes can be reused with the same size LED
tube as long as the ballast is bypassed.

Can anyone recommend a software package that is good for solar electric
project management? We would like to be able to have the capability to
coordinate scheduling, procurement, budgeting, expense tracking as well as
noting communications about a given project. If an integrated package doing
all these things doesn’t exist we’re especially interested in just good
stand-alone procurement software that takes projects from BOM, to request
for bids, to POs and invoices.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Solar/Small Wind in Columbia

2012-08-08 Thread Steve McCarney
Hi Ryan

There are some very experienced solar professionals in Colombia that also
do wind and hydro (assessments, designs, installations and service). You
can get assistance from them that is up to date and knowledgeable about
local conditions. Several work the entire country and I can make few
introductions if you contact me off line at st...@self.org

 Wrenches,

Have any of you installed in Columbia? I've been talking with some
friends outside of Bogota, Columbia about solar and wind, and now I am
curious. If any of you have experience with renewables there it would be
 great to hear from you.

Topics - On and off grid systems, Interconnection, permitting, exporting,
code, electric rates, licensing, wind maps, etc.

 Thanks,

Re: [RE-wrenches] Array direct farm machinery?

2012-07-20 Thread Steve McCarney
Could the site use any refrigeration? There is a family of fridges called
ice lined and these store energy in the form of ice, avoiding the need
for a battery. Some are made for solar direct drive operation, but at lower
voltages (12-24 vdc nominal). They have reasonably long autonomy times at
constant hot temperatures (tested at either + 32C or +43C). Most will offer
5+ days of autonomy in those hot conditions.

Try Sundanzer (USA), True Energy (UK), Dometic (Luxemburg), Haier (China)
and Vestfrost (Denmark). All of these companies have these and all are
prequalified for vaccine storage by the WHO, however the companies would
let you know if they offer similar products to fit your needs. Sundanzer
also could supply a small freezer.

 Howdy Wrenches,

We are thinking up new ideas for powering agriculture in the rural
developing world to propose for the new USAID Energy Grand Challenge for
 Development http://www.poweringag.org

One idea is to build PV array direct water pumping systems for irrigation
that could be converted to power productive use farm machinery for grain
milling, oil pressing or other farm processing jobs after the harvest is
in. The idea being that after the harvest they don't need the irrigation
pumping for a bit and the PV array could be switched over to drive a motor
to accomplish a mechanical task. For that matter if it was an easy swap
(Anderson 2 pole connectors, dual battery boat switches, etc) between the
pumping load and the machinery load the same PV array could be used on any
given day to either run the pump or the machine(s). I'd like to avoid
batteries altogether and I'd like to allow a single 1 to 3 kW PV array to
accomplish multiple array direct mechanical tasks.

This is just a brainstorm at this point, maybe this is a crazy idea and
not worth pursuing, but I'd be really curious if anybody has any experience
doing anything like this or any other ideas to bring to the table.

 Any ideas? Thanks!

Re: [RE-wrenches] Need info resource re wind hail damage

2012-03-12 Thread Steve McCarney
Hi Allen

For what it is worth I had a house in Puerto Rico with two modules on the
roof. Hurricane Marilyn blew the roof off of the house but the panels
stayed on for the ride. The roof landed upside down pinning the modules
under the debris. These the UniSolar UPM880 (non glass) and they survived
with minor cosmetic damage and still measured full output after they were
salvaged.

In Florida we were hit hard again by Hurricane Charlie, with 145 mph winds
reported nearby our home. This time the roof stayed on and again so did the
pv panels. We were the only place with power that first night since all the
grid was blown down. So, modules can survive some of the big winds if fixed
well enough and if you lucky. I have been lucky since none of our family or
friends were (physically) hurt in these storms.

 Fellow Wrenches,
We have an engineer-type whose wife wants badly to do a PV system, but he
puts up barriers. In her words:

Well, I don't know how long ago it was, surely old technology by now, but
some experimental solar panels at Sandia Labs were shattered by hail and it
caused a big controversy. My husband says it turned him off solar. It comes
up every time I talk to him. Either he is complaining about the wind or the
 hail or whatever.

I get to respond to this, and am seeking specific assistance: Can anyone
send me a link to any formal standards, or reports of aggregated field
experiences, indicating that wind and hail (not to leave out whatever)
are not issues of concern when PV modules are installed correctly? Anything
that came from Sandia Labs would be ideal, but it just has to be reputable
enough to satisfy a grouchy retired national lab engineer. Web links,
reports, product warranties, etc. - all good.

 Thank you in advance.
