The AHJ is looking for the UL certification. The IRS agent did not. The agent
looked at the equipment and the displays to see that the system was
operational, paid no attention to any labels.

Wrenches,

Has anyone had a customer that was being audited and requesting a
manufacturers’ certification statement for their PV equipment? The only
manufacturer that has been able to provide a statement has been REC. I’m
attaching a copy for reference. Is there an assumption that most equipment
qualifies? The IRS definition for “qualified solar electric property” is pretty
vague -

"Qualified solar electric property expenditure. The term "qualified solar
electric property expenditure" means an expenditure for property which uses
solar energy to generate electricity for use in a dwelling unit located in the
United States and used as a residence by the taxpayer."

Re: [RE-wrenches] midnite new inverter

2024-04-12 Thread pieter offgridenterprises.org via RE-wrenches
Just as a point of clarification: The Delta lightning arrestors (gray cans) are
not surge arrestors and are not designed to protect sensitive electronics. They
are lightning arrestors, it says so right on them. They are a spark Gap device
and work on Dv/DT. The lightning arrestors do work for the designed purpose
and are a good idea as a first line of defense. The surge arrestors like the
MNSPD series are by definition a surge arrestor and specific break over
voltages and should be used on all input and output connection points on a
system. I would ever recommend removing a delta lightning arrestor, but would
encourage installers to add a surge arrestor. The Delta lightning arrestors are
useful to protect things like stator windings, transformers, and conductors,
but they offer little protection for electronics like a surge arrestor is
designed to do.

Bill,
Now that you mention it I did not have an SPD near the inverter, I have one
on 1 of 2 TOP Racks, other rack with old Delta... My inverter lives on my
workbench to allow swapping other inverters in for load testing using my whole
house with everything connected to ancient wiring which did not include an SPD.
I put them on all my customers' systems and have had no issues on most of them
and have never had to replace one. . I have removed lots of those grey cans
but have not taken care of my own system !!! The Fortress eflex was not fully
protected either. That strike would have been the perfect test of the SPD's if
I had them all installed. I had a perfect real world test of
Outbacks ACA with surge protection on two GVFX inverters that had annual
lightning failure until I installed their surge protectors. There have been no
more failures since (at least 10 years) The lightning was so severe at that
location that the power company was constantly having issues on that power line.

Fronius is certainly having issues, many of their products are out of stock. We
are eight weeks into trying to resolve a service issue, and cannot get parts.
Historically this sort of problem would have been resolved in less than one
week. I suggest that looking at an alternative would be advisable. If this
downward trend continues with Fronius, support after the sale will be a problem
for the installer and the customer. I am having good experiences with other
manufacturers but have not used any of them in an AC bussed configuration, so
for that reason I will not suggest an alternate brand.

Hi, Mechanix~ I asked a Greentech location about quantity four Fronius string
inverter PRIMO 6.0-1. (6kW AC output, single phase 240 volt 60 hz) This p/n is
in the Greentech portal but my particular branch hasn't done much with Fronius.
Today the branch manager told me "Fronius no longer exists."

Can any of you confirm or correct this report? I have an off-grid opportunity
for which I wish to AC couple some of the PV. If Fronius USA has indeed "left
the building", are there other string inverters that can be selected for
country code "off grid 60 hz"? I'd like for the PV inverters to only curtail
their output wattage if there's a frequency shift from the grid forming
inverter (frequency/watt). Schneider XW Pro units would be forming the grid.
Schneider has a white paper # 990-6421 on AC coupling but this document is
almost three years old & no help at all in finding compatible PV inverters.
Rapid shutdown is not mandated for this gig & each array would be evenly
illuminated. IIRC, the List hasn't been highly enamored with SolarEdge in
recent years; is that still the consensus?

the reason i ask is that i’ve got a friend, a good competent installer ( well
versed in OB, Schneider, magnum) who’s had continuing nightmares with them.

he’s got 2 systems each on is a stacked pair of 12kw units, both offgrid.

each system was designed by sol-ark, meaning the design was approved by them
for the loads/solar etc.

He’s been through 7 MCU swaps.
He’s been through a field call required because the over the air firmware
update caused the inverters to go into 50hz and for some reason that isn’t
fixable via the web.
He had an inverter that didn’t work correctly out of the box. They charged him
$2500 deposit for a replacement.

Then they charged him $1500 to fix the inverter he sent back under warranty.
Thats right $1500 to fix a warranty which they agreed was a warranty issue.
Hes not going to pay but this $1500 has been going on a while.

The inverter they sent to replace the broken one had a older MCU firmware so
wouldn’t stack and it took tech support way to long to figure that out then
they had to send him a new MCU…...

And the list goes on.

But Im asking, is this poor guy just an anomaly or will anyone else chime in
about issues?,

Because at this point I have no desire to install one given his experiences

Hey now all you off grid designer/installers,

I just had a conversation with generator manufacturer (name withheld for the
moment), about 8-13KW water cooled gensets with UL & LP gas powered. I
explained that there is a long time hole in the market since Onan & Kohler
dropped their gensets for prime power in this size range.

If they made the investment to produce & UL certify a 13KW - 1800 RPM - water
cooled – 2 wire start, prime power rated - 120/240vac genset, how many off grid
systems are being installed with oversized gensets?

If this was available how many units would each of you be interested in per
year? I am not asking for a commitment just a market survey for this sized unit.

If there was 20-30 companies selling 4-5+ each per year this might be a
possibility.

Let me know either off list or on list (if this is OK ? Michael let us know) &
I hope there is a possibility here for more appropriately sized & available
gensets for our off grid client systems.
I will be passing along this research to the OE manufacturer. If you do not
want your name passed along let me know for now.

Buckling of the wall studs is most likely going to be the failure mode. You can
use WebStructural to look at different designs. You'll find that accurately
defining the constraints on the structural members is the most troublesome.
https://webstructural.com/

Personally, I don't think that supporting a couple of thousand pounds of dead
load hanging off the sides of $2 studs fastened with unknown fasteners into
unknown top and bottom plates is a super great idea. I would do it on a poured
concrete wall, but this sounds like it is asking for trouble.

2x4 studs have compressive force to hold up over 1,000 pounds each when
constructing a load bearing wall, so I don't think that is a limiting factor.
But I am not a structural engineer, so consulting one would not be a bad idea.

Thanks Jason,

I’m still wondering if there is an IBC reference for weight. The Discover
manual only states:

“ For structural and seismic stability, the AES Battery must be mounted onto a
vertical supporting surface strong enough to support a minimum of 227 kg (500
lbs) per battery. Failure to follow these instructions can result in death or
serious injury.”

Other than asking a structural engineer, how can I be sure that the wall is
rated to 4,500 lbs?

That won't be a problem as long as they are spread across several studs. Even
2x4 studs would be fine. Check the installation manual for details. The shear
and pull out strength of the fasteners will be the limiting factor, not the
wall itself unless very poorly constructed.

Hi all,

I have a project where I am contemplating hanging 9 Discover AES batteries on a
wall. Each battery is around 200 lbs, and although the stud wall is a bulky
2”x6” with 16” OC…I have apprehensions that hanging almost a ton of battery on
the wall is a good idea. I’ve seen it done in other install photos, however I
can’t seem to find and good building code that would inform my decision.

Does anyone out there have a building code reference or experience that might
help?

Thanks!
