Re: [RE-wrenches] Chevy Bolt

2018-04-24 Thread Jay
Hi Darryl

It has to do with the zero point crossing.
With pure sine wave, it crosses almost vertical angle so no time spent there.
Mod square wave usually has a flat crossing, totally screws certain things up.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Chevy Bolt

2018-04-24 Thread Darryl Thayer
I wonder what is the attempted charge rate? Depending upon the year the
Volt can draw 3.3 kW or 6.6 kW the EV charge station will also have an
effect. If it is a level one charger 120 Volt input the car will draw 1.5
kW up to 1.9 kW. I have charged a Leaf on a level one charger, about 1.5
kW using a Magnum 4448 PAE no problems. But I have not tried a Level two
charger.

Does anyone know if the onboard car charger uses "sine wave clipping" SCR
technology? to control battery charging?

Re: [RE-wrenches] Chevy Bolt

2018-04-23 Thread Starlight Solar Power Systems
Hey Bob,

It may not be that a modified square wave is causing the problem but rather
your MSW. At 20 years old, I bet you have ringing on the waveform of your
inverter (voltage overshoot during switching). Look at it with a scope. I have
seen 10-12 year old inverters hitting 300+ volts PP on the spikes. Some
equipment will see that voltage and prevent operation and other equipment will
hum along (pun intended) blissfully.

We have had a couple of problems with magnum inverters working with specific
loads. It would be best to test one before committing to it.

Chevy bolt

Obviously the Bolt will not tolerate the modified sine wave and we’re
discussing upgrading and we were wondering if the magnum inverter charger would
work in this situation?

Thought that I would check with the knowledge base !

Thanks

Pretty sure the Magnum will work, since I have a customer with a Chevy
Volt running on old Trace SW4024 inverters.  Not mod sine, but they're
not near as clean as the Magnums either.
