[RE-wrenches] Extreme snow load ground mount?

2015-01-16 Thread Lars Ortegren
Wrenches,
I have a fun one for you. We have a couple of potential clients who live in
the high Sierra with a 420 LB design snow load. After hunting around, not
even a three rail system comes close with any module I can find, so now I'm
looking for a pole top that will dump the snow, and still handle 120 mph
winds. Any ideas? I would just say sorry, no solar for you,but like many of
you I love a challenge.

[RE-wrenches] Extreme snow load ground mount?

2015-04-27 Thread Dana
Nice rack!

However if the panels are not rated for more the 100-113 PSF, the design is
still not acceptable if the AHJ wants 420 PSF right?

Q – What is the stoutest PV module out there?

Lars,

Yes, the only way you can even consider an install like this is a pole
mount, with a steep tilt in the winter to shed most of the snow. It would help
to know if the place will be used in the winter or summer and how big of an
array in KW or Sq Ft. Customer would have to understand that you cannot
guarantee it...there are some combinations of wind-snow-temp-moisture that make
snow cling to anything. If this is permitted, start dropping off cookies to an
engineer.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Extreme snow load ground mount?

2015-04-27 Thread Ray Walters
Gravity only acts downward. The modules are rated to 113 PSF which is
with the module laying flat. If the module is at an angle, it can take
more downward force.
For instance if it is at 70 degree tilt, It could take a downward force
of 113 PSF / cos 70 or 330 PSF.
Its possibly reasonable to assume that the snow might not slide off, but
the total snow load is not going to act perpendicular to a tilted module.
If the AHJ wants to argue the point, ask him what the snow load
requirements are against a surface of a wall. A vertical surface would
only see wind loading, not snow loading.

Nice rack!

However if the panels are not rated for more the 100-113 PSF, the
design is still not acceptable if the AHJ wants 420 PSF right?

Q – What is the stoutest PV module out there?

Lars,

Yes, the only way you can even consider an install like
this is a pole mount, with a steep tilt in the winter to shed
most of the snow. It would help to know if the place will be
used in the winter or summer and how big of an array in KW or
Sq Ft. Customer would have to understand that you cannot
guarantee it...there are some combinations of
wind-snow-temp-moisture that make snow cling to anything. If
this is permitted, start dropping off cookies to an engineer.

Wrenches,

I have a fun one for you. We have a couple of potential
clients who live in the high Sierra with a 420 LB design
snow load. After hunting around, not even a three rail
system comes close with any module

Re: [RE-wrenches] Extreme snow load ground mount?

2015-04-27 Thread Glenn Burt
I have seen published an adjustment factor used when calculating pitched roof
snow loads that is used to modify the published flat snow load value.
Can't put my finger on it right now, but you could probably get more
information with an intern search.
I have used it on ground mount calculations.
